emailed me a Dear Sam letter."
      "Ouch. I'm sorry about
that. What a cowardly way to break up with someone," she remarked, unable
to keep the disdain from her voice. "I know I don't know you, but I can
read people fairly well and you seem like a good, sweet man who was hurt
by a foolish, thoughtless woman. Maybe it's easier said than done, but let
it go…don't take this with you."
He was quiet and she hoped she hadn't offended him. Who did
she think she was— Dear Sherry ?   Yet she sensed he would need all his
sensibilities about him for the journey ahead. "Are you okay? I'm sorry if
I offended you."
"No, no…really, it's all right. That's what everyone
has been telling me but…it's hard."
"I know…believe me."   She knew all too well, painful memories
threatening her composure. She should change the subject. "Tell me...do
you like the outdoors?"
      "Yeah, I love it outside."
"Me too. What else do you like?"
"Hiking and camping. A little fishing. I've always
wanted to make my way across Alaska , you know,
the real Alaska . And I like writing. Don't laugh , but I wanted to be a writer when I grew up."
She caught her breath at the synchronicity of his reply.
"I would never laugh but…wow, that's weird. I always pictured myself writing
songs against the backdrop of New Mexico or the
wilds of Alaska ."
"Then why are you doing this ?" he asked.
Ouch . "Real life. Sometimes it takes
us to places we didn't expect or puts our dreams on hold, but my grandmother is
always telling me to never give up on
my dreams. I have no intention of doing so and you shouldn't give up on yours
either."
    Damn Sarah. Way
too much information and not even close to finding a way into any script they
have here. Groaning inwardly, she
refocused on the task at hand.
"So here's to our dreams, Sherry."
"Here's to our dreams. Now let's get back to tonight
and you . What if I told you that we
were lying together on a blanket near a creek, underneath the stars having
a late night picnic…would you like that?"
"I'd be a fool not to.
You're a romantic then?" he asked almost hopefully.
    "Guilty."
    "Me too."
"Put your arms around me, Sam. Hold me tight."
    "Done."
"Hmmm…that's nice. Are you ready to give this a try?"
He started to answer, then went quiet. "I'm not sure
what to do."
"Leave that up to me. Are you somewhere where you can
get comfortable, if you know what I mean," she asked and heard his breath
catch.
"What? Oh. Give me a minute?"
"I'll be waiting," she assured him as she sat
back drawing in a deep, relaxing breath. She could do this. She had to do this. Strangely enough, she
found she almost wanted to do this with him .
    "I'm back."
"Okay…now close your eyes and just relax. Take nice long,
deep breaths and listen to my voice. Jump in wherever you want to. If I wanted
to go skinny-dipping, would you join me?"
He laughed out loud. "Hell yeah."
      "Then what are we waiting
for...let's do it!   Help me get undressed."
      "What are you wearing?"
      "A little sleeveless dress...soft
and flowing...the color of moonlight," she suggested, wondering what he
really liked.
      "Nice. How are you
wearing your hair?"
      "My hair is up...for
now. Long chestnut hair with a few loose strands falling against my neck."
      "And what color are
your eyes?" he asked tentatively.
      "Green. And yours?"
      "Blue. And my hair…what's
left of it before they…well, it's black."
      Hearing the change in his
voice, she assumed he was nervous about going to Afghanistan . "Don't think
about anything else but us for now.
Get lost with me , okay?"
    "Okay."
    "I can see you,
Sam. You're one handsome man and you look very sexy in the moonlight. Reach down and lift my dress up and over my head."
"What are you wearing underneath?" he asked a bit
shyly.
    " Nothing, "
she teased.
He laughed and she described her body to him, giving him
details, but leaving some things to the imagination… his imagination. She waited a moment before she
