camera with Owen. It looked like it could have been shot out,
but the recorded footage didn’t show any vehicles along the road before or
after it went offline. One of the ranch hands would install a new one within
the hour.
After washing up, he stepped into the kitchen. Garret sat at
the table, still in that damn towel, scanning through his phone.
“Perfect timing.” Megan gestured for him to sit then opened
the oven door.
He sat at one of the three place settings at the table. Cloth
placemats and napkins, glasses of ice water, and silverware.
“Do you want a beer, honey?”
Both he and Garret said, “Sure.”
She smiled and twitched her cute ass over to the fridge and
pulled out three bottles. After she set them on the table, she rubbed her palms
on her thighs. “Okay, this is going to sound strange, but I made poutine.”
Garret set down his phone. “Meaning what?” He twisted off
the top of his beer and Megan’s.
    “Promise me you’ll try it.”
Trey looked at his brother. Garret shrugged one shoulder.
“I’m game. I’ve had some crazy grub when I’m filming overseas.” He tipped his
head toward Trey. “Cowboy, here, is all meat and potatoes.”
Trey twisted off the top of his beer. “Why don’t you let
cowboy, here, speak for himself.” He lifted his bottle to Megan. “Anything
you’ve made, I’ll eat.” He took a fortifying gulp of beer as she giggled and
went to the oven. Using hotpads, she took out the first platter, drizzled
something brown over the top, then set it in front of him.
“Potatoes. Gravy.” She grimaced. “And cheese curds.”
Trey breathed deep of the mouthwatering aroma of potatoes
and gravy. The white half-melted cheese curds seemed odd, but he’d be a sport.
“Awesome.” He reached over and patted her ass then pulled her closer. “Thank
you.” Tugging her down, he kissed her quick. “Much better than the penguin
steaks I was expecting.”
Megan laughed and went back to the stove.
Garret gave him the stink-eye and took a long pull on his
beer.
In minutes, Garret had a platter the same size as Trey’s,
and Megan had a regular-sized plateful in front of her.
“Dig in.” She forked a chunk of cheese and a fry. The gravy
dripped off it and she stuck it in her mouth. “Mmmm.” She chewed and watched
them.
Trey followed her lead and put a big forkful into his mouth.
The gravy burst with flavor on his tongue, then the cheese and fries
complemented the taste and all of it went down real easy.
“This is fantastic.” Trey wanted to say more, but his
stomach rumbled for another forkful.
Garret chewed and his eyes opened wide. “Really good, baby.
I mean it.” He took another big forkful. “Where’d you learn to cook like this?”
She picked at her fries. “I worked my way through college,
so I know my way around a kitchen.”
“You sure do. Any other Canadian dishes you’re going to
introduce us to?” Trey stuck another forkful in his mouth.
“Beer flapjacks, sourdough pancakes, saddlebag spuds, rum
trader beans.”
Both he and Garret stared at her.
She laughed. “I worked at a traditional Alberta restaurant
called The Poutinery. But I can cook regular food, too.”
“We’ll have to stagger Inez’s south-of-the-border and your
north-of-the-border food.” Garret tucked back into his chow.
“I like cooking for you.” She glanced at both of them, then
away. What was going on in her head? Had her parents gotten to her this
afternoon?
She grabbed his empty beer bottle and Garret’s, too. “Want
another?”
His brother grunted with a mouthful, and Trey nodded.
“Thanks.”
She came back with the bottles and the small book she’d
brought from the old homestead. Pushing away her half-empty plate, she opened
the book. “Your mother let me take this book. It’s the copy of your
great-grandmother’s journal.”
    He and Garret kept eating.
Megan read the passages and explained that both their mother
and father believed the earliest
