that sweet voice belonged to burrowed in deeper beside Bram.
âUh . . . Ghleanna?â
âJust another five minutes,â she softly begged. âJust another five.â
But in less than five minutesâmore like ten secondsâGhleanna jerked away from him, wide dark eyes gawking.
âWhat are youââ she began.
But Bram quickly cut in, âI was here first.â
âYou . . . oh. You were.â She closed her eyes, shook her head. âYou got a bit clingy when I stretched out last night.â
âDid I?â Bram sat up, ran his hand through his hair. âSorry about that.â
âNo need to apologize. And you werenât . . . I mean, your hands didnât go . . . I mean . . .â She let out another breath. âYou were quite proper is what I mean to say.â
âGood. Good.â He threw his legs over the side of the bed. âThen we can forget it ever happened.â
âRight. Good idea. It never happened. We were both just . . . tired.â
âAnd all that snoring.â
âRight! The snoring. How could anyone expect us to sleep with that lot snoring away? We had to sleep together. It was necessary.â
âAlthough,â Bram admitted after a moment, âit was quite lovely, wasnât it?â
âAye,â she replied, her voice soft. âIt was.â
âThank you for that.â
âAnd thank you. Thatâs the best Iâve slept inââ
The door swung open again, cutting off Ghleannaâs words. âOy!â Cai yelled into the hallway. âAddolgar did see âem in bed together! Who knew the little bastard had it in him?â
Hew stuck his head in. âThey still have their clothes on. Whatâs the point of being human if youâre going to do it with your clothes on? Playing with the flesh is the best part.â
âMaybe they got dressed quick.â
âNah. I bet they just slept.â Hew shook his head. âBoring.â
âNot everyoneâs like you, Hew. Running around, fucking anything that moves.â
âLetâs go!â Adain yelled from out in the hallway. âI want to eat!â
The door slammed shut and Bram closed his eyes, trying to remember that this would all be over soon enough.
âThat was a bit awkward,â Ghleanna sighed.
âOf course it wasnât. Weâre dragons. We donât have all those weak sensibilities like humans.â He waved toward the door. âThat was nothing.â
âCome on, you two whores!â Addolgar bellowed from the hallway, most likely waking up the entire building, and if not, the brothersâ laughter probably did the trick. âItâs time to eat! Letâs move, move, move!â
âOkay,â Bram told her. âNow that was awkward.â
Â
Â
After a quick morning meal in the pub, theyâd gotten on the road as the two suns rose, heading toward the ocean and the port where theyâd meet the boat that would take them into the Desert Lands. As they walked, Ghleanna kept thinking about what had happened that morning. Waking up in Bramâs armsâeven fully clothedâhad been . . . strange. Mostly because sheâd been so comfortable. Sheâd never been that comfortable in a maleâs arms before.
Maybe it was because the royal seemed so non-threatening. He was Bram the Merciful, after all. He never ate humans and was always running around trying to create alliances and truces with their kingdomâs enemies. Heâd never been in a battle in his life and hadnât even noticed the one right outside his own castle gates.
He was definitely not the kind of dragon she ever saw herself with. As a warrior from a warrior clan, sheâd always been with other warriors. Then again, sheâd rarely stayed the night and when she did, she never slept in those warriorsâ arms. And Ghleanna was even less comfortable with human
