Emma: Part One (Outpost Nine Book 1)
lights.
Emma's heart skipped a few beats. "Shit!"
"What?" Jack tossed up his arm, blocking her elbow as she scrambled over him to get off the bed. "The fence!” she shouted in real panic. “I forgot to re-engage the audible alarms after you sent your transmission."
Max leapt to his feet and reached for his pants. "What's going on, Emma?"
Wringing her hands, she hastily explained, "I rerouted power from the audible alarms connected to the sensors outside the perimeter to free up enough juice for long-range higher frequency transmissions. I planned to turn them back on after my shower but then we ended up in here and…"
She pointed to the ceiling and the frightfully loud alarm box wired there. "That's the secondary alarm. The power popped off because we've switched to backup power. There’s only one reason the main power supply would have been depleted." She clutched at Jack's hand and sent a worried look Max’s way. "The fence is dying. We're going to be breached!"
The cyborgs’ faces slackened for a split second before turning hard as stone. She watched with a strange sort of fascination as the two men who had just shown her such tender lovemaking and breathtaking pleasure transformed into ruthless, skilled soldiers. They weren’t fazed by the very real impending danger. They reacted with reassuring urgency, but with a sense of calmness.
Jack grabbed the corner of the sheet and crouched down in front of her. Emma’s cheeks flamed with embarrassment when he started to clean her there . She didn’t miss the pink streaks staining the sheet. While he wiped away the evidence of their lovemaking, he held her gaze and gave very calm and very stern orders. “If you want to survive, you will do exactly as you are told.”
She gulped and nodded. “Yes, sir.”
Jack pressed a tender, lingering kiss on her bare stomach. “Don’t be afraid, Emma. We’ll take care of you.”
“We’ll protect you.” Max wrapped one of his brawny arms around her shoulders and dragged her into his embrace. His lips touched and lingered atop the crown of her head. “We’ll keep you safe.”
Holding Jack’s strong hand and leaning into Max’s protective heat, Emma closed her eyes. Gripped by fear, she pressed her cheek to Max’s chest and listened to the steady heartbeat. The alarm clanging overhead pushed her own heartbeat into overdrive. Her heart thumped against her rib cage, and she tried not to hyperventilate.
After all these years, her worst fears were about to be realized. But unlike the nightmares that had plagued her since her father’s death, she wouldn’t be facing the scourge of undead on her own.
    I’m not alone .
Eyes wide open now, she drew in a steadying breath. There was only one choice now. She had to be brave. She had to be strong. . She had to stand between these two cyborgs and fight not only for her life, but theirs.
Come sunrise? Her life would never be the same again.
