serving when the entrées are up?â
âRafael will assign who helps. But thanks.â She walked away before Rafael, who seemed to see and hear everything, even if he wasnât in sight, caught her. Knowing she couldnât slip away to call Kevin before his two oâclock class frustrated her even more, but she couldnât take any chances. Not today. So, she wouldnât know what happened until he got home after five.
All because of James.
Oh, get real, she told herself. She wasnât mad because Rafael had chewed her out. She was mad because James hadnât told her he had aâ¦fiancée, apparently.
And why should that bother her? It made her life much less messy, if James wasnât available for a relationship other than what he built with Kevin. Granted, she would welcome James into her life if Kevin wanted her to, but beyond that there wasnât a reason to learn more about each other.
Easy come, easy go.
Â
âWho was the waitress?â Cassie asked James as they headed to their cars after lunch.
âHer name tag said Venus. â
âNot the Americaâs Sweetheart, Jamey. The other one. The redhead with the short hair and red lipstick.â
âYou donât miss much.â
âIâm not supposed to miss much.â
They reached Cassieâs car. âHer name is Caryn Brenley.â
âBrenley?â Her voice pitched higher. She grabbed his arm. âYou found your child?â
âHe found me. Well, she did, actually. His mother. Then he did.â
âA boy.â
âYeah.â
âHow do you feel?â
âI donât know yet. Honestly, Cass. Itâs still confusing.â
âWhy?â
âLong story, and we both need to get back to work.â
She unlocked her car but didnât open the door. âWhen did you meet him?â
âSaturday.â
âAnd youâre just now telling me?â
âI called. You werenât home. Then I realized I needed to let it sink in first.â
âThe momâs pretty. Awfully thin, though.â
âSheâs been dealing with a lot over the past year.â
âHow about your old friend, her husband?â
âDied a year ago. Listen, Iâll catch you up on everything, but not now.â
Cassie cocked her head. âWhyâd you bring me here with you?â
âI wanted to tell her something, and to watch her in action, frankly. I didnât think I should be sitting there aloneâit would be too obvious. I hadnât counted on her not working the dining room.â He looked back at the building. âI think sheâs upset with me for coming.â
âWellâ¦yeah.â
âWhy do you say it like that?â
âItâs her place of business. You intruded. She probably has rules forbidding mingling with the customers. Everyplace I waited tables had a similar rule. Not that we always obeyed it.â
Why hadnât he considered that? He looked toward the dining room windows, could see people still sitting at tables. Had he caused a problem for her?
âI canât go back and ask,â he said to Cassie. âIf sheâs in trouble for it, I would only make it worse.â
âYouâll figure out something.â She hugged him. âIâm so happy for you.â
âDonât be happy yet. Thereâs a lot to work out between the three of us.â
âItâll be worth the effort.â She stepped back then opened her car door. âYou coming into the office today?â
âRight behind you.â
He waited until she backed out before he walked back to where his car was parked, closer to the building. He looked into the window again and saw Caryn standing there, looking back. He lifted a hand. She turned away.
Unpredictable. Why the hell had he thought he would like that about her?
Â
Shortly after five oâclock James parked in front of Caryn and
