yourself scarce! Iâll see you tomorrow. I love you.â
âThanks.â He kissed her on the cheek. âLove you too.â
âGo straight to your fatherâs house,â Lawson called after him as he jogged toward the house. âNo speeding and stay off the cell phone!â
Lawson painstakingly re-created every detail from the night of Garrettâs proposal, from the position of the candles to the strawberries he fed her, covered in whipped cream. She showered and doused herself with his favorite perfume. Her newly purchased lingerie was covertly hidden underneath her dress. This night would signal a new beginning for them, and Lawson couldnât wait another minute.
As she lit the last candle on the table in their backyard, she heard Garrett calling for her inside the house.
âHey, Lawson, where you at?â
âIâm out here in the backyard, honey. Why donât you come join me?â
Garrett approached the opened back door. âI would but . . .â He stopped, astonished by the alluring scene before him. âWhatâs all this?â
Lawson strutted over to him and flashed a seductive smile. âDoesnât it look familiar?â
Garrett inched toward her. âYes, it does. You look incredible, by the way. Whatâs the occasion?â
âNo special occasion.â She threw her arms around his neck. âI thought it was time weââ She was interrupted by a loud, shrill cry from inside the house. âIs the TV on?â
âNo.â Garrett removed her arms. âThatâs what I was coming out here to tell you. Simonâs here. He is asleep in his carrier. Make that was asleep in his carrier.â
âSounds like heâs wide awake now.â Lawson exhaled and tried to mask her disappointment. âGo check on him.â
âHe probably dropped his pacifier.â He gave Lawson a quick kiss. âIâll be right back.â
Lawson busied herself by grazing over the food. Garrett returned a few minutes later.
âIs he okay?â she asked.
âHe needed to be changed. Heâll drift off to sleep in a minute. I put him back there in Reggieâs old room.â
âI didnât know you were getting him today,â replied Lawson, slightly miffed.
âI didnât either. Simoneâs best friend was in an accident today. She asked me to look after him while she tended to her friend. Sheâs going to stop by and pick him up when she leaves the hospital.â
âOkay.â Lawson smiled up at her husband, determined not to waste another second discussing Simone. âWhere were we?â
Garrett drew her to him. âI believe we were right here, Mrs. Banks.â
âYou remembered.â She leaned in for a kiss.
Garrett stopped her when their lips were just shy of touching. âYou know what? I think I need to get the baby monitor. If Simon starts crying, we wonât be able to hear him out here.â
âGarrett, heâs fine. Let the boy sleep. Thatâs what babies do best.â
âI know. I want to be on the safe side, though.â Garrett didnât wait for her approval before dashing inside to retrieve the baby monitor.
Lawson poured herself a glass of champagne to calm her nerves. She couldnât fault the baby for being a baby. She couldnât even be upset with Simone, because she would drop everything to be there for her friends too. She just wished that it couldâve happened any other night. Lawson had downed two glasses of champagne by the time Garrett returned.
He set the monitor down on the table. âIâm sorry about that, babe. I had to look for it.â
She gritted her teeth. âItâs fine. Youâre being a concerned dad. Nothing wrong with that.â
âAll right, no more interruptions,â he announced and swept her into his arms.
Lawson yielded. âYou promise?â
âLawson, this is all very
