Often it takes the poison some time to take effect, and once darting a deer, they follow behind it for some distance until the poison takes effect. The darts themselves are flimsy and stick-like, and they do not puncture very far into a body cavity (if at all beyond the subcutaneous fat layer). They are useless against the undead, and while they may be of some use against others during the apocalypse, one must have enough lung-power to make the shots effective. There is also a great deal of skill and patience in making an effective model.
     
     
     

    Similar to a blowgun dart in general principle, Flechettes use the power of gravity to "dart" someone. Unlike most blowgun darts, flechettes are entirely made of steel, and they have a sharpened, aerodynamic shape with flared tailings, which makes them look vaguely like an elongated zeppelin.  The term itself is French (for arrow), and they were first used consistently during WWI. Generally, they weren't more that 3-4 inches long  and weighed less than a pound.
     
     
    Like the longbow which could pierce a knight's armor, this little missile was able to do quite a bit of damage to a soldier's head, no matter what protection. They have evolved since then into a more streamlined shape and smaller overall size and weight. Though, generally, they are still dropped from airplanes onto the battlefield. The victims experience these small missiles with the same velocity as a gunshot wound, and usually, they do a similar amount of damage. A more recent prototype, the "Lazy Dog," was less than 2 inches and was used in the U.S. during many wars of the 50s and 60s. They were encased in a much rounder missile, and when launched out of an aircraft, they created a buzzing or whistling sound reminiscent of bees. Nowadays, they can be placed inside a ground explosive, creating damage and shrapnel wounds in a large area. The use of these was particularly prolific by the U.S. during the Vietnam War. If one had a plane, and a large supply of these, one might be able to take out a large field of zombies if a good proportion of their heads were hit. However, due to their random nature, a large-scale bomb would probably be more effective in the long run.
     
     
     
    The smallest flechettes are similar to buckshot in their capabilities and are placed (about 2 dozen at a time) in special shotgun cartridges. Firing one of those would create a large amount of widespread damage in a single zombie or possibly two zombies close together. However, skill is needed to aim them effectively at targets. 
     
     
     

Mêlée Weapons 1: Swords and Blades
     
     
     
    Mêlée weapons (non-projectile weapons used in close combat) are often preferred by the zombie purists because they don't run out of ammo during a fight. However, not all mêlée weapons are considered equal. Swords and blades, while requiring a certain mastery to use effectively, are one of your best options. A true master is able to use a sword or scimitar with ease through the undead, and the sharp long blades of a katana or long sword can make killing a snap in the right hands.
     
     
     
    However, there are some drawbacks. Some blades, like knives and daggers, are too short to be effective in such close hand-to-hand combat with a zombie. There is a real chance of infection when using these blades unless the user is a confident expert. Other blades are limited by the types of movements they can easily do on a body or head. For example:  the katara is only good for thrusting stabs, while the katana is good for slashing (though only one side of the blade is sharp). Self-injury from a blade during battle is a real danger.
