Eve?â said Polly at last. The ties on her robe trailed on the soft pink carpet behind her.
âIâm your host, of course,â Eve said, doing her best to sound light-hearted as she moved into the centre of the spacious room. âIsnât this lovely?â She swung the carrier bags hopefully at her friends. âGoodies for everyone.â
âThis is your sleepover?â said Rhi, looking confused. âWhat about the competition?â
âThere was no competition,â said Lila scornfully, putting her hands on her hips. âI knew this was too good to be true. Come on, guys. Letâs go.â
Eve felt panicky as her friends headed for the door. âNo, wait. Wait! I . . . wanted to apologize to you. To all of you. I . . . I. . .â
Friends to kick you in the tush when you misbehave. She could hear Caitlin in her head, as clear as a bell. This was her last chance to fix things.
âIâve been a total idiot and a bad friend and Iâm sorry,â she said in a rush. âPlease stay. Thereâs an explanation!â
Lila marched back towards Eve. âAn explanation ? What is there to explain? Youâve made all our lives miserable. You tried to steal our boyfriends. I think thatâs enough explanation .â
Tears welled up in Eveâs eyes. âIâve been a bitch. I know I have,â she said in a small voice. âYou donât know how difficult it is, being me.â
Lila laughed in amazement. âNow Iâve heard it all!â
âQuiet, Lila,â said Rhi. She sat down on one of the wide white beds. âLetâs give Eve a few moments.â
Hot tears ran down Eveâs cheeks. She let them fall. It was a strange feeling, letting herself be vulnerable like this. âOne minute everything was great,â she sniffed. âThen Lila came along.â
Lila glared. âIâve heard enough of this.â
Eve caught Lilaâs arm as the dark-haired girl headed towards the door again. âIâm just saying what I felt! Iâm not saying I was right to feel that way, OK?â She looked hopelessly at the hostile faces of the three girls around her. âIâm sorry Rhi, for the whole Max business. Iâm sorry Polly for the way I treated you.â She swallowed. âAnd Iâm sorry for not making you welcome when you came to Heartside Bay, Lila. I was . . . jealous, I think.â
Eve was surprised to hear herself say it out loud. Jealous. Sheâd been jealous, all along.
âJealous?â echoed Lila incredulously. âOf me?â
âDonât kid yourself, Lila,â Eve said with a waspish flash of her usual self. âYouâre beautiful. And popular. Youâd only been in the school for five minutes before all the boys started falling for you. You took Ollie.â
âFor all the good it did me,â said Lila sourly.
There was a long silence.
âListen, Eve has apologized,â said Rhi at last. âWe should give it a go.â
Polly shrugged, clearly trying to keep the peace. She waved her arms around the room at the warm blankets folded on the ends of the beds, the basket of hot chocolate and biscuits on the dressing table, the widescreen TV and the huge marble bathroom. âWe do have all this to try before the night is out.â
Lila grunted, but sat down on the end of a bed.
âGood!â Eve said, relieved. âTime for presents.â
She gave everyone a swish little carrier bag. âPJs,â she said nervously. âDesigner, naturally. I think I got the right sizes.â She hoped the others actually liked what sheâd bought them. âIâve got us all face masks too. Lovely organic ones. Mummy uses them every week. You wouldnât believe how. . .â
. . . expensive they are , she was going to say. Something in Lilaâs face stopped her. âHow nice they are,â she finished a little lamely.
Everyone took
