Willowpaw. âHello!â she mewed shyly.
Willowpaw, who had been looking troubled, brightened up. âHello, Hollykit!â she purred. âOr is it Hollypaw now?â
âNot yet,â Hollykit told her. âWhy are you here?â The RiverClan cats werenât carrying anything. Perhaps they had come to ask for supplies in return for the catmint.
Willowpawâs whiskers twitched. âI had a dream,â she mewed. âI want Leafpool to help me interpret it.â
âCanât Mothwing do that?â Hollykit asked, confused.
Willowpaw glanced at her paws. âMothwing suggested we get Leafpoolâs opinion.â
âWhat was it about?â
Willowpaw looked solemn. âI canât tell you until Iâve shared it with Leafpool.â
âMothwing, Willowpaw!â Leafpool stood at the entrance to the medicine den. âWelcome! Come in!â She waited, holding back the trailing brambles, while Mothwing and Willowpaw weaved past her into the shadows beyond. Hollykit stared wistfully after them as the leaves swished back into place. She felt a nudge in her flank and turned to see Lionkit butting her gently with his head.
âWhy are you staring at them like a dumb rabbit?â hemewed. âMothwing and Willowpaw have visited the camp before.â
Hollykit was unable to keep her wish to herself a moment longer. âI want to be a medicine cat!â she blurted out.
C HAPTER 7
âA medicine cat?â Lionkit stared at Hollykit, bewildered. âWhy?â
âThere are other ways to serve your Clan apart from being a warrior,â Hollykit snapped.
âBut youâll be stuck in the camp with all the sick and injured cats instead of out in the forest hunting or fighting.â There was no criticism in Lionkitâs tone, only disbelief.
Hollykit did not want to hear about what she would be missing. âBut think how much Iâll know ,â she pointed out. âIâll learn all about healing herbs, and Iâll be able to share dreams with StarClan.â She stared at him, willing him to understand. âWhat could be more exciting than that?â
âFighting ShadowClan?â
âBut I want to have dreams just like Leafpool and Willowpaw!â Hollykit insisted.
âYou already do,â Lionkit purred, his eyes glinting with amusement. âDreams about hedgehogs!â
âYou cheeky kit!â Hollykit squeaked in mock anger. With a small leap, she pushed Lionkit to the ground and began to tussle with him.
âWhat are you two doing?â Squirrelflightâs stern meow made Hollykit freeze. Lionkit struggled from her grasp, and the two kits sat up and faced their mother. âIf youâve got nothing better to do than make the fresh-kill pile dusty with your fighting, you may as well go back to the nursery.â
âBut I havenât eaten yet!â Hollykit protested.
âThen take something with you,â Squirrelflight answered. âAnd take something for Ferncloud, too.â
Hollykit hated eating in the nursery. Prey always tasted better eaten in the fresh air. But she didnât protest. She saw that Squirrelflight had already turned to look at Thornclaw, who was resting beneath Highledge.
âI hope Thornclawâs remembered that heâs leading the sunhigh patrol,â the flame-colored she-cat meowed, half to herself.
âYouâd better go and remind him, seeing as you seem to be keeping an eye on everyone around here,â Hollykit muttered.
âWhat was that?â Squirrelflightâs thoughtful gaze remained on Thornclaw.
âNothing,â Hollykit mewed guiltily.
âDonât forget Ferncloud,â Squirrelflight reminded her, padding away.
Hollykit stared after her mother, feeling a surge of rebellious anger. âIt wouldnât be so bad if she even noticed she was spoiling our fun!â
âSheâs just busy,â Lionkit mewed.
