find ourselves in this mess.â
Shelby chewed on that for a minute. Finally she asked, âDid he?â
âSee this coming? Not that I know of. I try to keep current on city business in case Iâm called in when Calvin Green is out sick.â
âLooked pretty healthy last night.â
âYeah, Calvin might outlive us all. But Eugene Stone and Bob Bryant could die of stress in the first week if they donât calm down.â
âSome people.â
âExactly.â
âWhat other good news do you have?â
âAs we saw from the water tower, power is out in surrounding towns as well as here. Thereâs already been looting in Killeen.â
âI canât say Iâm surprised about that.â
âNeither am I.â Max hesitated, and then he added, âWeâre not immune to the same thing.â
âLooting?â
âLook, we have a nice small town here. Good neighbors and dedicated leadershipâEugene Stone notwithstanding. But Abney is far from perfect. Weâll have our share of crime before this is over.â
Shelby didnât have an answer for that. Instead, she focused on refilling her mug.
âIâd hoped there wouldnât be panic for at least forty-eight hours.â Max swallowed the rest of his coffee. âReports over the ham radio are that things are worse in Houston, Austin, and Dallas. So far thereâs no information from out of stateâapparently the aurora is messing with our ability to send or receive radio waves consistently or for any great distance.â
Shelby nodded, her heart racing with the scenario he was painting. âAnd the military base?â
âLocked up tight. The team that went to Killeen had to pass right by Fort Hoodâs entrance. In fact, they drove up to the gate, but they couldnât get any information and certainly couldnât get in.â
Shelby wrapped her hands around her coffee cup to still their trembling. Finally she admitted, âWhat worries me most is not the water or the electricity. Itâs Carterâs insulin.â
âWhich is why I want you to go to the pharmacy first thing.â
âDo you think theyâll be open?â
âMaybe. Itâs worth a try.â
âBianca and Patrickâtheyâre supposed to be here at ten.â
âItâs not quite eight.â Max glanced at his watch.
Suddenly Shelby regretted that she didnât own a watch. Sheâd quit wearing one years ago. Who needed them? She could always check her phone for the time. Only now the phones were useless.
âWe should both be back before they get here,â Max said. âLeave a note on your door in case weâre late.â
âAll right.â
âTake what cash you have. Do you need money?â
âNo.â
âBuy insulin and testing stripsâas much as theyâll give you.â
âI donât think insurance will approve that.â
âThe pharmacy wonât be able to contact the insurance company anyway. Itâs going to be a giant mess, and I think youâd do well to be the first in line.â
Shelby pulled in a deep breath. She reached for one of Maxâs Pop-Tarts. She was going to need massive amounts of calories and caffeine to handle this day, but one bite of the sweet pastry confirmed she was fooling herself. She dropped it on the table and covered her face with her hands.
She could not eat while her childâs health was at risk. She tried to pray, but her mind was numbâoverwhelmed by a thousand questions and her darkest fears.
After a moment she peeked between her fingers and asked, âWhy are you and Carter going to the grocery store?â
âTo talk to Henry Graves.â
âAbout buying food?â
âYes. How much do you have?â
Shelby stared off across the yard, slowly shaking her head. âThereâs a little in the freezerânot much.â
âWhat
