didnât say anything for a moment. She was probably comparing him to his father and thinking he didnât measure up. âMy dad was definitely someone to look up to, but he didnât take credit for himself. He gave God the credit.â
âA good thing to do.â
âBefore my fatherâs death, I didnât have much use for God. You were aware of that.â
Elise nodded, sorrow in her eyes. âYou made that pretty clear.â
Seth sighed. âYeah. I thought my parents and their religion were old-fashioned. Who needed God?â
âSo youâre saying you changed your mind when your father died?â
âHis death made me think about my own life. I startedattending church with my mother, because it was important to her. I wanted to do whatever I could to help her with her grief. And in the process, and much to my surprise, I became a believer.â
âIâm glad to hear that.â She stood and turned toward the window, refusing to look at him. âNow tell me about Olivia.â
Seth sensed Eliseâs withdrawal as she gazed out the window. âIs everything all right?â
âYes. Just get on with your story.â
âPlease sit down again.â
Turning to look at him, she shrugged. âIf thatâs what you want.â
âI do.â
âIâm listening.â She sat, her posture tense again.
âWhen I became a Christian, I realized Iâd lived a very self-centered life.â Seth tried to gauge Eliseâs reaction to his statement, but she appeared unmoved. He wasnât sure what to make of her lack of response. âI knew I had to try to make amends. To forgive those who had wronged me and seek forgiveness from the people Iâd treated badly in return. Especially you and Sophie. I needed to let her know that Iâd forgiven her for her deception. I also wanted to find out if I really was a father. Iâd refused to even consider the idea before, but once I let go of my anger, I realized there was a real chance that I was Oliviaâs father. I tried to contact both of you.â
âSo thatâs why youâve been calling me?â
âYes.â But you wouldnât talk to me. He wanted to say that, but right now those words would probably only alienate her further.
Tears welled in her eyes as she waved her hand toward him. âIâm sorry I wouldnât talk to you before. Can you forgive me?â
âDo you think we can forgive each other?â
Elise didnât say anything for what seemed like forever. She blinked back the tears and released a heavy sigh, then nodded.
âThanks.â
âSo thatâs how you came to have Olivia.â
âNot quite. Thatâs just how I started looking for her.â
âWas Sophie still in Key West?â
Seth shook his head. âShe wasnât there, and no one I talked to seemed to know where sheâd gone.â
âSo what did you do then?â
âA couple of people suggested she might have gone back to Atlanta, where sheâd lived before.â
âWas she there?â
âNo.â
âHow did you find her?â
âI didnât.â
âThen howââ
âHow did I get Olivia?â
Elise nodded.
Seth took a deep breath. âI received a call saying Sophie intended to give Olivia up for adoption.â
âWhy?â Shock sounded in Eliseâs voice.
âIâm not sure.â Seth stared at his cast, breaking eye contact with Elise. He didnât want to see her reaction to what he was about to say. She didnât think much of him. Sheâd made that quite clear when she ended their relationship. His own guilt over the situation didnât help. Would the rest of the story change her mind or only confirm what she already believed about him?
âWhat did the caller say?â
âThe woman only mentioned the adoption and that I was listed as the father on
