call name, and by handler as well. Pogo was a young Standard Poodle whoâd been doing well in the variety but wasnât yet much of a factor in the group. One name, and Crawford immediately knew where he stood.
âPogo.â Viv frowned slightly. âI donât believe Iâve seen that dog. Is he new?â
âJack Stacey just started specialing him this spring.â Ronâs arm was looped around his wifeâs shoulders, and he gave her an affectionate squeeze. âLeoâs been beating him pretty easily.â
âPogoâs not a bad dog.â Crawford was ever the diplomat. âJust young. Next year heâll be more of a threat.â
âWho cares about next year?â Terry plucked a cherry tomato out of his salad and popped it in his mouth. âToday weâre winning Best in Show.â
âDonât say that!â Ron cried. âYouâll jinx us.â
âMaybe heâll bring us luck,â said Viv.
Crawford, as usual, declined to comment.
âDid you hear Melanieâs news?â asked Terry.
Viv and Ron both turned to look at me, but all I could do was shrug. I had no idea what he was talking about either.
âSheâs going to figure out who murdered Barry Turk!â
Oh, Lord.
âReally?â Ron didnât look impressed. I couldnât blame him a bit.
âYou have big ears,â I said to Terry.
âYou bet I do.â He placed his fingers behind his lobes and waggled them impishly. âAnd a big mouth too.â
âWeâre working on correcting both,â Crawford said sternly.
âBut weâre not succeeding,â said Terry, mimicking the stern tone.
I had to laugh, in spite of myself. Viv did too.
Ron was silent for a moment, as if thinking something over. âI imagine youâre aware that Barry used to handle Leo?â
I nodded.
âDoes that make me a suspect in your investigation?â
Whoa, I thought. Everyone was taking this much too seriously. âI donât have any suspects. Or an investigation. Alicia requested that I ask a few questions and I told her I would. Thatâs all there is to it.â
Viv shook her head sadly. âI have to admit, I do feel sorry for her.â
Abruptly Ronâs arm slid down from around his wifeâs shoulders. âWhy on earth would you say something like that?â
âBecause itâs true. Obviously she was in love with Barry. She left Bill for him.â
âAnd got stuck with a man who refused to do the right thing by her,â Peg chimed in.
âDo the right thing?â I repeated. âAs in marry her? Is that what Alicia wanted?â
âOf course she did, hon,â said Terry. âAnyone with eyes could see that. You straight people are so conventional.â
âAlicia mentioned it to me a couple of times,â said Viv. âWe used to talk when Leo was there. She said she felt like she was living in limbo with Barry. She wanted a commitment. I donât think she ever gave him an ultimatum or anything, but it was pretty clear she was beginning to get fed up.â
When Iâd seen Alicia at her house, sheâd offered to tell me anything, but she certainly hadnât told me that. I wondered if there were any other important facts sheâd neglected to mention. I also wondered just how much of a temper Alicia had. It looked like there was more than one reason that the police had settled on her as their prime suspect.
âBarry and Alicia were already living together,â I said. âWhy wouldnât he marry her?â
âBecause thatâs the kind of bastard he was,â said Viv.
âBecause he liked his freedom,â guessed Terry.
âBecause he was a fool,â Ron said.
Crawford leaned into the group and spoke up for the first time. âBarry didnât marry Alicia because he didnât have to. He knew sheâd stay with him regardless, and she
