Every dirty, poisoned rag of it.â
Chapter Seven
T IM CONTINUED STARING AT Molly and Marya. âOkay, so far Iâve figured out this much,â he told the immobile girls. âIt has something to do with time. Somehow time moves one way for you and another way for meâand everyone else.â
He put his hands on his hips. Time is weighed down where they are, keeping them still. Theyâre sort of stuck in it. Funny, Iâve never thought of time as sticky before.
Tim held out his hands, moving them closer and closer to Marya. There . He felt it. The air around her gave him some resistanceâit tingled. In a sharp gesture, he plunged his fingers into the slower-moving molecules and yanked what felt like a heavy blanket off Marya.
Marya stumbled forward with such force that she knocked them both over. âOoof!â Tim grunted.
âSorry!â Marya giggled and helped Tim to hisfeet. He set his glasses back on his nose. âItâs so good to see you,â she exclaimed. âIâve been meaning to visit you butââ
âMarya!â Tim needed her to stop talking. She was acting as if this were the most normal reunion in the world. That was part of the problem, though: They werenât from the same world. Actually , Tim realized, technically we are. All the kids living in Free Country were originally from here, what they call the Bad World.
Marya took a breath, then began again, words tumbling out of her. âWhat with exploring and dancing, I just havenât found the time.â
âMarya, slow down a minute,â Tim said. âI need to do something about Molly.â
Marya turned and looked at Molly. âWhat is wrong with her?â
Tim snorted. âHer boyfriend is a magician. And not a very smart one, Iâm afraid.â He emphasized the b word, testing it out. It didnât sound so bad. But shouldnât he have been included in the discussion when that was decided? It seemed like he was the last to know, as usual.
âDo you think you can catch her?â he asked Marya. âSheâs bound to have some serious momentum going, like you did, and I donât want her to fall over.â
âSure thing.â
Marya got into position next to Molly. âReady.â
Tim felt for the sticky sensation in the air that indicated that time had slowed in that spot. He wiggled his fingers and yanked. Molly lunged forward, and Marya grabbed her, as she nearly tipped over.
âSteady now,â Marya said, helping Molly find her footing.
Molly turned to stare at Tim, wide-eyed and openmouthed. The moment of truth had arrived.
âMagic?â she said.
âBoyfriend?â he countered.
Molly blushed. For the first time in his life, Tim had one-upped her.
She gazed down at her clunky boots. âUh.â
âBoyfriend,â he repeated. This time, though, it was more of a statement than a question.
Molly laughed. âWell, you had to find out sooner or later. I was hoping that you would work it out yourself.â
âWho, me?â Timâs eyebrows rose. âYou know me better than that. I donât notice that itâs raining until my glasses fog up.â
âHm.â Molly took a step closer to him. âWell, I see that you stopped running away, at least.â
âI guess I have.â He took a step closer to her.
âDoes that mean youâ¦uhâ¦.â She trailedoff and gazed at her feet again.
Astounding , Tim thought. Molly OâReillyâspeechless.
He decided to not prolong her discomfort. âYeah, I guess it does.â He smiled at her.
Only now it was Molly who backed up. Had he already done something wrong?
She studied his face. âMarya wasnât joking, was she? You are a magician?â
She didnât seem afraid, just curious and amazed.
âUh, yeah, thatâs true,â he replied. This was going a lot better than he had
