dipped his snout in respectâand he wasnât making fun!
Grayâs heart swelled. âObviously, get to Riptide Shiver, wherever they are. Remember, Striiker leadsââ
The dogfish nodded. âI know, I know. Be less grating if I disagree.â
âI mean it, Bark,â Gray said, giving the dogfish a tap to the flank. âIf heâs making a bad call, you have to
convince
him, not argue him to death. Heâs not stupid.â
âNever said he was stupid,â Barkley answered. âAnd heâs gotten much better at listening to advice from what I heard from the ghostfins. A real leader.â
Gray nodded. âBring them here.â
Barkley fidgeted. âKaleth was pretty clear . . . .â
Gray cut his friend off, keeping his voice low. âAnd in this case I donât care. Either she provides protection for them, or Iâm gone. Even if they send me to the Sparkle Blue, I wonât . . . I wonât be a part of leaving Riptide out there undefended. I canât make mistakes like I did before.â
Gray had once left his best friends in the world in Rogue Shiver and joined Goblin Shiver instead. Goblin had spoken stirring words about the need to band together, to protect each other, but it was all an act. He only wanted power. Gray shook his head at the memory. Though things had worked out since then, heâd never fully forgiven himself.
âDo you think weâre creating another Finnivus in Kaleth?â Barkley asked.
Gray never considered this. âI donât know,â he admitted. âI hope not. But does a good shark turn away those in need?â
Takizaâs familiar voice joined the conversation as he drifted between them. âShe does when the fate of the entire Big Blue is at stake.â
âWe just
saved
the darn thing from Finnivus!â Barkley said.
The betta looked at Barkley and the greenie attached to him. âNot what I meant. And Finnivus only had power enough to be a great tyrant. Hokuu has the potential to bring a mega-armada of prehistores into this world and destroy everything.â
âPrehistores,â whispered Barkley, his eyes widening. âI was hoping Kaleth was stretching the truth to get Gray to stay.â
âShe did not. Imagine five or ten thousand mariners as large as Gray and some much larger,â Takiza explained. Both Barkley and Gray went silent. âSo you can see the Seazareinâs concern.â
âBut how do we know sheâs on our side?â Barkley asked. âI mean,
Kaleth
is a prehistore.â
Takiza shook his head. âShe follows her good king, Bollagan, who was sent to the Sparkle Blue by Drinnok. Drinnok will stop at nothing to be freed from the smaller ocean underneath this one. Thankfully, a seaquake sealed the rift.â
Barkley looked over at Gray. âThat must have been how you got here!â
âI guess,â Gray said. âI donât remember.â
âI have told you too much already,â Takiza added. âDo not mention any of this to Kaleth. Her mind should not be cluttered by the past.â The betta flicked a fin at Barkley. âGo to your friends. I have stunned the guardians and you should be able to slip away.â Takiza showed the way with his tail.
âYouâll be okay without me?â Barkley asked Gray.
âIâll muddle through,â he told his friend. âGo. Bring them here. Weâre not following her command on this. No way.â
Takiza shook his head but didnât disagree. âIf you must. But that is sure to put Kaleth in a terrible mood.â
âThen weâre even,â Barkley said. âBecause Iâm in a terrible mood.â
And with that the dogfish left them.
CHAPTER 12
EVEN WITH THE MAREDSOO THAT TAKIZA HAD given him, Barkleyâs muscles ached from snout to tail. He doubted he could have made it at all without the healing and
