over, hands on her knees, she sucked in air. “The park’s closed,” she said between gasps. “It’s not safe to be here.”
“Excuse me?” The father frowned at her. “What do you mean closed? It’s a public beach, you can’t close it.”
Audrey glared at him. “What? You thought the blockade you had to push out of the way to get in here didn’t mean anything?” She paused to breathe for a second. “You need to leave now or I’ll have you arrested.”
“John,” said the mother, her tone placating. “We should go.” She herded the children back into the van.
“We drove eight hours and paid a fortune to rent a house up here. We are damned well going swimming,” John yelled.
Audrey pulled out her cell phone to call the sheriff. She was in no mood to argue with entitled tourists. Nor did she have the time now that she was hot on Nick’s trail.
But before she could dial the sheriff’s number, a howl froze her in place. It came from the corner of the parking lot, and when Audrey turned to follow the sound, she met Nick’s green eyes. He was already there. Had been there...waiting. Instead of crossing the lot, he’d bolted to the side and found more beachgrass to camouflage his presence. Now, it seemed, he wanted to be seen.
“Get in the car,” Audrey screamed as she took aim with her gun. Naturally, the father moved between her and Nick so she couldn’t get a clear shot.
“You can’t order us around like that. Our taxes pay your salary.” He stabbed an angry finger in the air, either oblivious or not caring about the wolf.
“Well, your taxes won’t bring back your children if they die out here,” she snapped. “Get in your car and get out of here. It’s not safe.”
With that, she ran past him and pulled the trigger, hoping to get lucky. Unfortunately, the shot went wide. Nick didn’t even blink. The discharge of her weapon did, however, galvanize the tourist family into action. Car doors slammed and tires squealed as they made a quick exit.
Which left just her and Nick.
He gave a gruff bark, no doubt unhappy that she’d scared off people he considered prey.
Audrey squeezed off another shot. This one came closer, burying itself in the sand to his right.
She thought he would run away then or at least try to evade her, but instead, he walked toward her. His body shifted as he went, morphing from beast to man. Like his brother, Nick was large with a physique that was hard not to admire, even if the soul it housed was dark as sin.
“You will not shoot me,” he said. His thighs flexed as he crossed the parking lot to take her gun.
Unable to defy him, Audrey didn’t even protest as he discharged the remaining bullets into the sand. Then he wrapped his hand around the gun and squeezed. After a moment, he threw it to the ground.
Audrey gasped. The weapon was now a twisted lump of metal, completely destroyed by his bare hand.
“This is the power you fight,” Nick said, his voice dangerously soft. “Watch that you don’t look the same when this is all over.” He shifted back into his wolf form, his humanity seamlessly melting into his beast.
Oh my god, werewolves are really real . Her mind reeled with what she’d just witnessed. She’d never seen Tao shift. Only heard him talk about it, but Nick had just provided incontrovertible proof that werewolves were real.
    Holy shit.
Audrey gaped at him as her mind raced. What to do? Her gun was gone and Nick’s command meant she wouldn’t be able to point one at him anytime soon.
She considered tackling him, but while she was big, he was stronger. Her only other weapon was a utility knife she always kept in her pocket. Remembering how Tao couldn’t shift when he was injured, she wondered if she could hurt Nick enough to trap him in his wolf form. Not only would it slow him down, it might make him easier to find and he couldn’t tell her what to do. If she could pull it off, they would have an advantage.
