through. He was such a talented builder and such a warm and loving person. It was a real shame he hid himself away so much.
“What about the fence? Some of the men said it’s going up pretty fast,” said Omar.
“Yes, thanks for the men you sent. I’ve had them digging post holes ahead of the building line, so that’s sped things up. My men can keep assembling the fence without having to stop and dig all the time. I’m hoping to get two more men to come along behind the team and roll the barbed wire over the top spikes. It’s an easy enough job, if you aren’t afraid of heights.”
“I might talk to Sam about releasing a few more men then. He’s so paranoid about anything happening to Leticia, he may agree to let a couple more panthers help out. They aren’t really needed around the main building. There’s plenty of humans to sound a warning if anything goes wrong,” said Omar.
“Sam’s really terrified, isn’t he? I don’t understand why he’s panicking so much. Leticia is safer here than she would be anywhere else, and she’s old enough to marry. I mean, if push came to shove, even Serena and Verity could marry. They’re very nearly twenty-one now, and Leticia is twenty-two,” said Ramona.
“Serena and Verity? They’re the cougars?” asked JB.
“Yes, they’re full-blood cougars, and Leticia is a full-blood panther. Autumn is only half-panther, so she’s probably safe, although the pack is still watching out for her, too. I don’t know how desperate the rogue panthers are.”
“If they want to build a dynasty, they need full-bloods, and Leticia is the only available panther. I can understand Sam’s concern. But I think they’re more after marriage and families, myself. They could have really hurt you when they grabbed you, Ramona, but instead they ran away. I mean, it would have been much easier for them to knock you unconscious and just carry you away. The fact that they didn’t do that indicates to me they want consensual relationships. Or, perhaps more accurately, consensual within their tribe,” said Omar.
“Actually, that’s what I thought, and that’s the way life is for many women in a small pack anyway. You can choose whoever you like inside the pack. Or perhaps whoever you dislike least. So it’s still a choice. It’s not like the pack Alpha just claims all the females as his or something. Although I’m guessing that someone will have to mate with the Alpha, otherwise why would he go to all this trouble?” asked Ramona.
“Once before you said only if it’s a consensual relationship will there be children, Ramona. How does that work?” asked Javier.
Ramona smiled at him. Trust him to go back and want the missing details filled in. “A shifter female is only fertile for a short time each year. If there’s not enough food or not a peaceful environment, she doesn’t come into season. That’s nature’s way of not giving her a bunch of babies in the middle of a bad drought or something like that. It doesn’t mean she’ll never have a child of rape, but it does mean she’s unlikely to conceive in a bad situation, such as having been abducted. If she’s torn away from her own pack, she couldn’t raise a cub by herself, so most likely won’t come into season.”
“Which brings us back to Sam overreacting about Leticia then,” said Javier.
“Exactly. I’m beginning to think he’s lost the plot. He’s not paying attention to the needs of the pack because he’s totally focused on his daughter, and she doesn’t need him at her side 24/7. As long as she stays inside this community, with a group of people, away from the gate and the boundaries, she’s very safe indeed,” said Ramona.
“So the pack is turning to Omar to lead them. Will there be a coup?” asked Javier.
Ramona grinned. In the old days, bloodletting and fights to the death had happened. These days, they were far more civilized and fought with words and democratic elections. Nevertheless she
