look.
Loretta looked at Mona like she was speaking in tongues. âYou make him sound like some kind of geezer from Jurassic Park ! Heâs not old. Heâs just mature!â Loretta insisted. âKeep your eyes on the road. Thereâs joggers cominâ out of nowhere.â
âDoes that grown man know what a huge crush you got on him?â Mona asked, her eyes directly on the road.
â Crush ?â Loretta erupted, almost choking on the word. âHave you not heard anything I just said? I donât have no crush on Mel! I donât go around screwinâ people I have crushes on! How many times do I have to tell you that Iâm in love with him, and heâs in love with me? Weâre goinâ to get married as soon as Iâm old enough.â
CHAPTER 10
âG IRL, YOU MET MEL A YEAR AGO AND YOUâRE ALREADY TALKING about marrying him? For reals?â Mona yelled. Her eyes looked like they were about to pop out of their sockets.
âYes, for reals!â Loretta yelled back.
âNuh-uh! You just turned fifteen back in March.â There was a touch of envy in Monaâs voice.
âMona, donât be so ignorant! We will wait until I turn eighteen and graduate. In the meantime, Mel and I will really get to know one another.â
For Mona to be so slow, she often made some smart remarks. âHumph! If you ask me, I say you and Mel need to get to know one another real good before you even think about gettinâ married. You are goinâ to meet a lot of hot men workinâ as a model. What if you meet one you like more than you like Mel?â
âI wonât. He wonât meet a girl he likes better than me, neither. I know it,â Loretta insisted.
âI donât know, girl. I have a hard time believinâ that your mamaâs man is goinâ to marry you .â
âYes! He said so himself. Why are you actinâ like thatâs such a big deal? Men marry the women they love all the time.â
âWell, for one thing, you and Mel gettinâ married is goinâ to surprise the hell out of everybody. Especially when they find out yâall been together all this timeâwooo!â Mona slapped the side of the steering wheel, and even though she had her eyes on the road, she almost hit a jogger anyway.
âWatch it!â Loretta hollered, grabbing the steering wheel. âI knew I should have taken the bus or a cab to Melâs place!â
âYou know I donât mind drivinâ you over there. I just wish you would let me drive you all the way instead of you gettinâ out at the corner and makinâ me wait for you in some spooky parkinâ lot, or the movies, or the mall.â
âI donât want Mel to see you. Heâs already worried about somebody seeinâ me over there when Iâm supposed to be somewhere else with you.â Loretta softened her voice. âUh, I hope you donât mess things up for me.â
âYou know I would never blab on you. I mean, I donât mind coverinâ for you and Mel . . . as long as thereâs somethinâ in it for me.â Mona sniffed and began to tap the steering wheel with her finger, anxious for Loretta to respond to the last part of her sentence.
âOh yeah! You can pick up those black pumps you wanted to borrow when I get home this eveninâ,â Loretta said.
âOne more thing. I need to borrow your brand-new Gucci purse too,â Mona added.
âMy Gucci purse?â Loretta hollered.
âYes, your Gucci purse. When you sent me into that adult store behind that strip club to get that slimy lubricant for you and Melâand that humongous, disgustinâ dildoâbecause you were too embarrassed to go in and buy that shit yourself, you promised me that I could borrow your Gucci purse. Donât you remember?â
Loretta scratched her head and gave Mona a thoughtful look. âI remember sendinâ you
