drive the other one some-place else today?â
âNo,â Lloyd answered. âWhy?â
âWell, if none of us drove it away, it was either stolen along with Omar, or Frankâs taken it somewhere.â He combed his hand through his hair and looked around. He saw people rehearsing, repairing sets, adjusting cameras, talking and eating, but no Frank.
âIâve got to find Frank,â Joe told Lloyd. âHe should be around here somewhere. I also want to talk to studio security to see if they saw anything funny.â
âGood idea,â Lloyd said. âWeâll take the trailer and see you back at the compound.â
âYou go straight back and check on Gus,â Joe said. âFrank and I will stop in town and report the catnappingâand maybe a truck theftâto the Crosscook sheriff.â
Gene rejoined them, saying that Dustin had revised the shooting schedule. The wranglers were free to search for Omar.
âWeâre out of here,â Gene said, sprinting toward the trailer. âWeâll see you at the houses.â
Joe watched the wranglers drive off and then headed to the security trailer.
âJoe!â Sassy called from behind. âWait! I have to talk to you.â
âIâm in a big hurry, Sassy,â Joe said, turning.
âWell, I heard what happened on the set,â she said. âAre you all right?â
âYouâd make a good reporter,â Joe said, smiling. âNothing happens around here that you donât find out aboutâalmost immediately.â
âHey, thatâs my jobâfolklore, remember?â Sassy pointed out. âI have to be on top of all the rumors and tales and find out which are true and which arenât. So is your story true? A wild puma stalked you while you stood in for Berk?â
âThatâs pretty much it,â Joe said. âYou didnât see what happened?â
âNo,â Sassy replied, obviously disappointed. âBut everyoneâs talking about it. So now we need to find out whether the mountain lion was sent to do damage or was just after the food in your pocket.â
âYouâve got quite a network, Sassy,â Joe said. âCome to think of it, you can be a real help to me right now.â
âWonderful,â Sassy said, taking out her purple clipboard. âWhatâs my assignment?â
âTell me where Frank is,â Joe said. âIâve lost track of him. Have you seen him?â
Sassy seemed disappointed that she wasnât getting a real investigatorâs task. âI saw him drive the truck away about an hour ago. I donât know where he was going. He did have a scuffle with someone earlier, though.â
âHe what?â Joe said. âWhat are you talking about?â
Sassy told Joe what sheâd heard about Frank and the man with the blue backpack.
âDo you know who it was?â Joe asked.
âI heard it might have been a guy who wrote a book about Jake Herman,â Sassy answered. âBut I donât know for sure.â
âAnd you havenât seen Frank since he drove off?â Joe asked.
âSure havenât,â Sassy said. âJust one more mystery to solve. This is the best film Iâve ever been on,â she added, her green eyes wide and round. âItâs absolutely wonderful.â Her rust-colored eyebrows arched high as she smiled.
âWell, Iâd better get going,â Joe said. âAre you going to be around the set all day? I might want to talk to you later.â
âSure,â Sassy replied, with a small salute. âLook me up anytime.â
Joe went to the security trailer and talked to a couple of guards. Neither had seen anything suspicious leading up to the pumaâs attack.
One of the guards was the one who had beenwith Frank earlier when the backpacker escaped on the motorcycle. âIâll tell you the same thing I told your
