Copeland. âWhat a surprise,â she said, after an introduction.
âI know,â Mariah said, drawing out the last word. âYour mother told me what happened. Your fatherââ
âItâs okay. Iâd really prefer not to talk about it.â
She patted Dominiqueâs hand. âOf course, dear. But you had your mother worried. Itâs not like you to run off the way you did.â
Dominique glanced at Kevin keenly aware of how he watched them. She didnât want to be rude, but she couldnât have Mariah rattling off about her family.
âMom knows I need space.â
Kevin stood. âWould you like to join us?â he said, grabbing another chair.
âYes,â Mariah said.
âNo,â Dominique said.
They both looked at her. âI meanâ¦you seemed to be in a hurry and I would hate to keep you.â
âOh yes,â Mariah said with a nod. âYouâre right. I do have an appointment with the contractor for our beach house. Itâs been a nightmare, but I wonât bore you with the details. You already know. Remember that French chateau your father bought for your mother? The headaches you two had to deal with renovating it was heaven compared to what Iâm going through, but Iâm sure your mother will fill you in on all the details.â She glanced at Dominiqueâs plate. âI see youâre watching your weight, which is always a good thing, but as Iâve told you a million times, big girls donât have to hide themselves in black. Wear what suits you not whatâs in fashion. The classics never let you down, but current trendsâ¦â She waved her hands as if dismissing a foul smell. âI mean, and Iâm not being cruel because you know I love you, but my goodness what youâre wearing looks like a uniform.â She turned to Kevin. âDoesnât it?â
âYes,â Kevin said. âProbably because it is.â
Dominique briefly closed her eyes. The end was near. He was going to tell her motherâs dearest friend that she was his driver and Mariah would have a coronary.
Mariah looked confused. âIt is?â
Kevin nodded. âItâs my fault. She knows it turns me on.â He winked at Dominique. âI love a woman in uniform.â
Dominique looked at Mariahâs shocked expression. âIgnore him.â
âOther men like nurses or maids,â Kevin continued. âBut a woman who can handle a machine and make it hum and hug the roadâ¦â He let his words fall away.
Dominique shook her head. âHeâs justââ
Kevin pressed a finger to his lips. âBut nobodyâs supposed to know about us yet.â
Mariahâs eyes widened. âItâs because of your father, isnât it?â
Dominique jumped to her feet. âWeâll talk later,â she said, ushering her to the door. âYou donât want to miss that appointment.â
âDoes your mother know?â
âThereâs really nothing going on, but Iâll explain it later.â
âMy lips are sealed until then.â She glanced back at Kevin. âDo you really know what youâre doing? He looks like a heartbreaker.â
âIâll be fine.â To her relief, Mariah agreed with her and left. Dominique returned to the table, determined to ignore Kevinâs smug grin.
âThat was fun. Think weâll bump into anyone else you know?â
She focused on her meal.
âAt least I know I was right about you.â Kevin cut into his braised turkey breast. âI can smell money. I thought as much the first day we met. Let me guess. Daddy cut off all your accounts and credit to force you to ârough itâ for a while. Why is he punishing you?â
Dominique had to stop a smile. Of course! This was the perfect story and Mariah had sprinkled it with enough truth so she could use his assumption to her advantage. âI
