plucked the tiny bottle out of his hand.
âW-w-w-hatâs going on?â Maxâs dad whispered, looking from Max, to Liah, to Tom. âIs that a ⦠that canât be a ⦠is that a ghost?â
Max spun around. âYouâve got to be joking,â he shouted at Liah, then to his father he added, âOf course itâs a ghost!â
âBoo,â interjected Tom, grinning.
Maxâs father suddenly looked extremely pale. âI donât feel well,â he muttered, and slumped to the floor in a faint.
âDad!â cried Max.
âLeave him,â said Liah. âWeâve got to get out of here.â
âIâm not leaving him.â Max tried to lift his dad from under the arms. âHelp me!â
âOK,â hissed Liah, grabbing one of Gregâs legs with her free hand, âbut keep the noise down or theyâll hear you.â
âYou canât really think the two of you are going to be together again?â Max muttered as they painstakingly dragged his father towards the stairs.
Tom nodded. âOf course. Liahâs the love of my life. Once Iâve had the elixir weâll be together forever.â
âUntil you die,â Max pointed out. âAnd considering itâs Death youâre cheating, I wouldnât count on being left alone to live happily ever after.â
Liah glanced uncertainly from Max to Tom.
âJust one or two drops, Liah,â encouraged Tom, âthatâs all I need, and then it will be like the old days.â
âNot quite,â Max said, wondering how they were going to get his dad down the stairs. âFor a start, nobodyâs allowed to fight duels anymore.â
âThatâs not a bad idea,â Tom grinned, âsince I nearly died when I fought over Liah.â
âWhat was the name of the girl you actually died for?â Max said, as innocently as he could.
âSarah,â replied Tom.
Chapter Fifteen
The silence that followed was even thicker than one of Liahâs stews.
âSarah?â Liah finally whispered. âI thought
I
was the love of your life?â
âYou are,â Tom said hastily. âSarah didnât mean a thing compared to you.â
âWell, she was worth dying for,â Max pointed out, laying down his dad at the top of the stairs.
âWhile I was slogging in the kitchen so you could be saved,â Liah hissed.
âBut I was willing to die for you first!â Tom said plaintively.
Max made a swooping action with one of his hands. âYou have crashed and burned, my friend.â
âAnd,â Liah added furiously, âI note that youâve never once looked me up in the Underworld.â She turned to Max. âGet him away from me â now!â
Max was happy to help. He seized Tomâs arm and dragged him over to the balcony doors. Inserting Deathâs key into the lock, he opened the doors. Instead of the welcoming glow of the night sky, he saw a familiar staircase lit with an ominous red glow. Tom began to struggle, determined not to return to the Underworld, but his ghostly strength was no match for a living human.
âYou know what they say,â Max panted as he shoved Tom through the doorway. âHell has no fury like a woman scorned.â
He banged the door shut and turned the key again before turning back to Liah and his unconscious father. Two bright spots of colour burned on her pale cheeks. âAre you okay?â
Liah nodded and tilted her chin. âNever better.â
At that moment, a catch clicked and Ralf and Larry pushed open the doors at the far end of the room.
âWhat the hell!â roared Ralf, pulling the gun from his pocket.
âWatch out!â Max cried as the man aimed at Liah and began to close in on her.
âOw, my head,â muttered Maxâs dad, dragging himself to his feet by the stairwell. âWhatâs happening? Ralf?â
