about the time difference.â
âWhat was so urgent?â
âI was trying to do a spreadsheet and I needed you to talk me through it, but I figured it out. Whatâs new with you?â
âAinât nothing new with me. My life is always the same; boring. Wait a minute, why are you doing spreadsheets? It just dawned on me that the number you left for me to call you at is to your sisterâs firm. You took your tail to Vegas and got a job, Amaryllis?â
âIâm just helping out Michelle. Her secretary is on a maternity leave.â
âWell, isnât that special? The partners still havenât hired a temp to come in and take your place, so I got double the workload. Iâm telling you, Iâm two seconds away from walking out of this place without looking back. I havenât been to the riverboat casino to get my gamble on since youâve been gone. But thatâs enough about me, are there any cute guys in sin city?â
Amaryllis looked at Jamesâ picture again. âThere is this one guy who has potential.â
âOoh la la. Who is he?â
âSomeone who would be perfect for me, but heâs not available.â
âLet me guess. Heâs married, right?â
âNope, engaged.â
âEngaged doesnât mean untouchable,â Bridgette replied.
âIt kinda does, Bridgette.â
âExcuse me. Who am I talking to? The Amaryllis I know always gets her man. Have you gotten soft on me, girl?â
Amaryllis laughed. âI must have, because back in the day I wouldâve pursued any man whether he was married, engaged or whatever.â
âYeah, youâve certainly broken up your share of marriages and relationships, girlfriend.â
âI know, and I wanna leave that lifestyle behind, but thereâs something about this guy that jumps out at me. Today, he brought me a rose and invited me to lunch, but I turned him down,â Amaryllis said sadly.
âBecause heâs engaged?â
âYeah.â
âWell, how in love can he be with his woman if heâs buying you flowers and asking you to lunch?â
âThatâs what I need to find out. Just how much in love is he?â Amaryllis wanted to know more for herself than for Bridgette.
âWhatâs his name and how did you meet him?â
âHis name is James and my sister introduced us. Heâs a homicide detective, and according to Michelle, heâs deeply rooted in his church.â
âAnother church boy, huh?â
âHeâs a minister, Bridgette.â
âA minister? Come on now, Amaryllis. You should know by now that you and church boys donât mix.â
âI know, I know. I donât do well with church boys, but for James, I might consider going to church.â
âOkay, I donât wanna bring up the past or anything, but I gotta know; Randall was a church boy and darn near perfect. So, whatâs so different about this James guy that youâd be willing to go to church?â
âI canât answer that. Like I said, itâs just something about him.â
âWell, in that case, do what you gotta do to get your man, Amaryllis.â
âIt might just come to that, Bridgette. Me doing whatever I gotta do.â
Chapter 6
âCourt is in recess.â The judge banged his gavel and left the courtroom. Michelle felt a tap on her shoulder and turned to see her father. âHi, Daddy.â
âBaby Girl, you were phenomenal, as usual.â
âThank you, but Iâm frustrated right now.â Michelle looked at her wristwatch.
âJames and I were supposed to meet at my house this evening to select the wording for our wedding invitations. I really hadnât planned on being in court this long.â
âWell, you heard the judgeâs ruling, so thereâs nothing you can do about it. Just call James and tell him that youâre stuck in court.â
âOkay.
