    Blinking, I realized he was right. Before, I had only checked out their suits and haircuts. Although I didn’t know any of these men well, I could tell a few of them were nodding. I had seen them at high-end charity events.
    “Her name is Mrs. Melanie Brent, twenty-five, a beautiful and defiant young woman who recently served me with divorce papers. Ironic, don’t you think?” Several of the investors gave courtesy chuckles, though I could tell they were there to see the technology. “If you remember her at all, you know that she can be cunning, willful, defiant, and very arrogant. Ultimately, she’s a spoiled, vain little brat who needed to be put in her place. Now that’s possible.”
    One investor raised his hand. My former husband nodded for the man to speak, “How do we know this is genuine? How do we know she’s not just putting on a show to make it look like your technology works?”
    Adrian’s expression darkened, but, paradoxically, his grin stretched higher along the contours of his face. “Simple. I’m going to put her on display. Several of you know her. You know that my descriptions of her are apt.” The doctor strode back across the room. I wanted to lunge at him.
    If I could have managed it, then these men would lose interest in Doctor Brent’s program. They wouldn’t want to buy into a system that couldn’t control a girl like me. Adrian strolled over to Nurse Valerie and took the tablet from her. He tapped a button, and my body relaxed. I regained control, but I didn’t know what to do with it.
    Tony stood right behind. He could pin or tackle me at a moment’s notice, and I could tell from the corner of my vision that he was tensed and ready to do just that. I wouldn’t catch him by surprise. At the same time, if I did try to dash off, it wouldn’t take much for Adrian to pull me back into the room.
    I figured my control chips had long-range connections. Besides, on the off chance they didn’t, this wasn’t the time to test it.
    As I stood there, debating what course of action to take, Tony unclasped the buckles that kept my arms trapped at my sides. I hated the idea of showing off my body to these men, especially as one or two furtively licked his lips, but I didn’t get to proffer an opinion. The orderly stripped the straightjacket off of me and stepped back, though I was sure he was still braced for some kind of escape attempt.
    “Melanie, come here.” To make it more embarrassing, Adrian slapped his thigh as though I were some sort of animal to be trained.
    My lower lip shook as anger rushed through me, but I didn’t start to move. “You see?” he asked. “She hates this. But she’s going to learn to like it by the time we’re done here today.” Each word brimmed with absolute confidence as though he couldn’t imagine any scenario where Adrian didn’t get what he wanted. “Really like it.”
    There were some more chuckles, but it was clear. These men wanted to see what he could do with me. “Should we start out with something voluntary?” Adrian asked his investors.
    Someone answered with, “Why not?”
    “Melanie, move to the center of the room. Then hold your hands up, just like you did before.” He sounded so smug, which made me realize that I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t give in, not again. He had put me through too much, so I simply stood there.
    No, I did better! I crossed my arms over my chest to show the men here that I hadn’t been tamed. My behavior hadn’t been modified, no matter what he said.
    “Oh. I guess it looks like the little slave wants to misbehave,” Adrian told the assembled men with a certain hint of condescension. He strolled over to me and asked, “Melanie, are you trying to make me look bad in front of these gentlemen?”
