also.â
âNot so soon!â Kay protested.
Aunt Jane laughed. âYouâll do fine now. And weâll be back, wonât we, children?â
âYes,â Violet said, and the others nodded enthusiastically.
âThen tonight weâll have a party to celebrate,â Kay pronounced.
âOh, boy, a party,â Benny said.
âIâll bring steaks,â Rolf offered.
âWeâll bring broccoli,â Jessie said.
âAnd potatoes,â Henry said.
âAnd ourselves!â Benny said in a loud voice.
âOh,â Kay said. âInvite Catherine, too, will you?â
âWith pleasure,â Violet said.
For their last night, they dressed in their best. As they left unit number one a yellow taxi was leaving. Millicent was on her way.
Going up the hill, they talked and laughed. How good it was to have the mystery solved.
When they arrived at Kayâs house, they were all, including Catherine, seated about a round table. Rolf brought in the steaks.
âHere they are!â Rolf boomed, dishing up a beautiful charcoal-broiled steak at each plate. He sat down next to Kay.
âWell, children,â Kay said, beaming at them. âYou and Jane convinced me to stay and Iâve never been happier.â
âYes,â Jessie added. âThis place is too beautiful to leave.â
Kay chuckled. â Now itâs beautiful. Thanks to your hard work.â
âThere were lots of mean things that happened,â Benny said, helping himself to the broccoli. âI was scared once or twice.â
âYes, Benny, there were lots of bad things,â Rolf said emphatically. âBut theyâre all over now!â
âWe even suspected you,â Violet admitted, glancing at Rolf.
âMe?â Rolfâs black brows shot up. âOh, I see. When you didnât know who the guilty one was, you were suspicious of everyone.â
Jessie smiled. âYes, everyone.â She gave a sideways glance at Catherine.
âNot me!â Catherine said, her dark eyes sparkling with humor. âI wondered myself who it could be.â Catherine looked especially pretty tonight in a soft yellow dress.
Jessie gave an embarrassed little laugh. âI have to tell you, Catherine, that when we made up your bed I knocked a book to the floor and your map fell out.â
Catherine said, âAnd you saw the big red circle around Kayâs motel, and the Adventure Hotel, right?â
âYes,â Jessie said. âWe wondered why.â
âBecause,â Catherine explained simply, âthis was the map I used to come to Florida. I marked Kayâs motel and the hotel because I wasnât sure which one Iâd stay at.â
âOh,â Jessie said, laughing with relief.
âItâs over now,â Kay said. âIâve gone through the reservations, and my motel will be occupied most of the winter.â
Rolf reached over and covered Kayâs hand with his big tanned one. âThatâs wonderful, Kay. I must admit I wanted you to sell because I thought your motel was making you unhappy. I can see now that itâs just the opposite. But running a ten-unit motel will need a lot of work.â He gave her a lopsided smile. âAnd Iâll be here to help.â
Benny poked Henry, grinning and motioning at Rolf.
âWonât your regular Snowbirds be surprised when they see the changes youâve made?â Jessie asked.
âTheyâll be delighted!â Kay answered. âExcuse me,â she said, pushing back her chair and going into the kitchen.
Henry and Violet cleared the table.
Kay reentered with a large cake. On the frosting were four figures outlined in pink icing, and underneath were the names Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny. âThis is to thank you for your work and to thank your Aunt Jane for bringing you to visit me.â She cut big slices for each one.
Bennyâs eyes grew big.
