some drama is afoot.
Once weâre safely behind a locked door, she asks, âHow was the meeting? What did I miss?â
âYou missed out on Gwen and Aunt Elenaâs dating rules.â
Candyâs eyes light up. âDoes that mean we get to go out on dates?â
âThey made sure to say that the decision to allow dating is up to each parent. So, naw, they havenât said anything about allowing us to date.â
âBummer. Because I just got asked out.â
âDish! Who is it? Is it that freshman football player youâve been drooling over?â
âJulian Rogers? Um, no. Heâs stuck up, just because his father is the coach. I canât stand him anymore.â
Okay, let me translate. She tried to throw some holla in Julianâs direction and got rejected. That equals him being stuck up.
âThen who asked you out?â I ask.
âChase.â
My mouth drops open. âChase and Sascha are together. I mean like, really together. Like one step away from getting married the day after graduation.â
âThatâs not what he said. He said that Sascha is starting to be a drag, and heâs going to tell her he wants to start seeing other people.â
âA drag how?â
âSheâs super clingy and always talking about being in love and all that noise. Chase isnât on that right now.â
I bite my lip and put my thinking face on. âChase doesnât seem like your type. Heâs kind of grungy.â
âGirl, he is hot to death. And he and his boys are starting a band in Chaseâs garage. He might want me to sing with them.â
Who is this girl?
âDoes Valerie approve of him?â
Candy laughs. âWho cares what Valerie thinks? Sheâs about to graduate in June. I was just cool with her while we were on Hi-Steppers. Sheâs not really someone I want to keep hanging with.â
âWhat about Sascha, though? Youâre cool with her, and sheâs in PGP. Sheâll tell my mom about you stealing her boyfriend.â
âAnd what will Mama Gwen do about that?â
Do I have to school her on everything? Dang! âMama Gwen will most certainly not want you dating Chase. Sheâll take one look at him and youâll be on lockdown to infinity.â
âI guess youâre right. Iâll just see Chase in secret then. Forget I told you about the whole thing. Iâm going to bed.â
What in the world? How can I just un-hear something like this? Iâm not wired that way. Once something gets in my head, it totally cannot get back out again.
âListen, Iâm tired of always having Gwen and LeRon in my mix because youâre up to shadiness. Why canât you just be a model teen like me?â
âBecause youâre boring, Gia. Iâm in high school now! I need to make some memories. Just think how memorable it will be if I get my first kiss from Chase!â
What would be memorable is the girl-fight that would most probably ensue. And since I donât promote teen violence, I cannot support this cause.
âCandy, if you start sneaking and seeing Chase, Iâm telling Sascha.â
Candy rolls her eyes and turns toward the wall. âBye, hater.â
My mind goes back to Chaseâs borderline abusive behavior at the state championship. Just because I didnât say anything when I saw it happen to Sascha, doesnât mean Iâll keep quiet if itâs my sister.
âTrust me on this one, Candy. Chase isnât as nice as he seems.â
âThatâs your hateriffic opinion.â
I shake my head. âWell, do what you want. Just donât tell me about it. Because if I know, Iâm blabbing. Iâve told you up front, so donât get all twisted when I follow through.â
Candy turns to face me. âUgh! I see now why Ricky wonât kick it with you! You donât know how to have fun.â
Puh-lease! I put the capital F in fun.
