remember. Had continued to push for more until he was so desperate not to lose her altogether that he gave in whenever she wanted.
Logan squeezed his eyes shut. He shouldâve been more responsible back then. Wiser. Shouldnât have blindly accepted her word that sheâd been protected. That sheâd taken care of things.
He learned later she deliberately hadnât. And, as a result, theyâd made a daughter then lost her. Heâd almost lost Amy, too. All because of her selfish obsession.
âBut you didnât leave it at that,â he gritted, facing her. âYou had to have your way.â
âI never meant to hurt you.â Her face flushed. âNot then and not now. As hard as it is to believe, thatâs Godâs honest truth.â
âWe both have regrets, Amy.â He sighed and shook his head. âYou were so young. You think that sits well with me? That I didnât step up? Put a stop to things?â
She smiled. It was small. A joyless tilt. âI knew what I was doing, Logan. Even at nineteen. And even if you were my first.â
âI was never interested in being your first.â
âI know. You wanted to stay friends. Wanted me to grow up. Live and learn.â She released the rail, wrapping her arms around her middle. âWell, I have. Iâm not that girl anymore. Iâve learned and I wonât ever be like her again.â
He clenched his eyes shut. She was right. Heâd wanted to wait. Had spent so much time waiting. Waiting for her to mature. Waiting to see if her adoration grew into something real. Something he could trust. Her friendship had been too important for him to risk it.
âI really and truly thought back then that all you needed was a little push,â she said. âThat if I could show you how I felt, youâd understand and feel the same. That youâd want the same things and I could make you happy.â A humorless laugh burst from her. âIt was such a stupid teenage thing to do. So ridiculous. And you called me on it. Do you remember what you said to me?â she asked. âWhen I told you I was glad Iâd gotten pregnant? That itâd been my intention?â
His stomach roiled, a roaring sounding in his ears.
âYou told me I was selfish. That I had a selfish obsession.â
âI was angry.â Dragging his tongue from the dry roof of his mouth, he said, âI shouldâve been less blunt. You were so youngââ
âBut it was the truth, wasnât it?â She kneaded her nape with both hands. âI was selfish and obsessed. I never had a clue how to be a real friend.â She shook her head. âBut that was the best lesson I ever learned. Iâve learned how to be a good friend, Logan. I have. And I finally did the right thing and filed. You donât have to pay for my mistake anymore.â
A mistake . Their daughter a mistake. Their marriagea mistaâ
âMarrying you was not a mistake,â he rasped. âI chose to make you promises and I intend to keep them.â
âThatâs my Logan,â she whispered. Her fingertips rose, bumping gently across the creases on his forehead and following the hard line of his jaw. âAlways doing the right thing. The honest, honorable thing. Thatâs how you got into this mess to begin with.â She leaned in, her breasts brushing his chest. âWe both have a chance to get out of this. To get our lives back. All you have to do is sign.â
He caught her wrists and pressed a kiss to her palms. âI vowed to take care of you and love you every day of my life. I donât break my promises.â
She stilled, her expression lifting. âAnd do you? Love me?â
He eased his hold on her when the dig of fragile bone hit his flesh. âYou were the best friend Iâd ever had. Iâve always cared for you.â
âThatâs not what Iâm asking.â She stepped
