was trying to speak. Her mouth was working, but words wouldnât come. Then finally, she said, âHeâs married her!â
âWhat?â
âDavid has gone andâand married Kit Delaney.â
âWow. That was fast,â Michael said.
âThat was fast? Thatâs all you have to say? It was wretchedâ¦horribleâ¦that he was bringing the little⦠the littleâ¦â
âHey, anybody seen my keys?â
Josh chose that moment to walk in. His keys were forever lost on some piece of furniture.
âMom, who are we talking about? Letâs see⦠wretched and horrible, that littleâ¦little âbitch would probably be the right word. Whoâs she talking about?â he asked his father cheerfully.
âKit Delaney.â
âHey, she was a cute little kid. Mischievous, but hey, you expect that in a kid. Why is she a bitch?â
âApparently, David has married her,â Michael informed his son.
âMarried! David went off and married her?â
âThatâs what your mother says.â
âIâll be damned. David. Married. Hmm. That will dampen a few expectations around here, wonât it?â he said, and laughed. âSo have you seen them?â
âSeen what?â Lenore asked.
âMy keys.â
âDavid Moore has gone off and married Kit Delaney, and all youâre concerned about is your keys?â Lenore said, incredulous.
âCanât drive without them,â Josh said. âHey, does Seamus know yet?â
âNo,â Michael told him.
âWell, I tell you, youâve got to give it to David. Send him off to retrieve someone, and he sure goes all the way. When are they coming here?â
âI donât know!â his mother said icily.
Kaitlin came breezing in, walking toward the liquor cabinet. âGood evening, all,â she said, then paused, studying them. âDid someoneâs dog die?â she asked.
âWorse,â Josh said gravely. He stared at Kaitlin, awry grin curling his lips. âDavid has gone off and married Kit Delaney.â
It was a good thing Kaitlin hadnât picked up a liquor bottleâshe would have dropped it. Her mouth gaped for a moment before she thought to snap it shut.
âYouâre joking,â she said.
âNo, weâre not.â Lenoreâs voice remained grim.
âButâ¦how? When?â Kaitlin demanded.
âIn Las Vegas. Last night,â Lenore said. âButâ¦I donât believe it,â Kaitlin said.
âWhy not?â Josh asked. âIf she looks anything like Marina, which she definitely did as a kid, she must be stunning. And why not keep it all in the family, as they say?â
âSheâs not our family,â Lenore protested.
Michael looked at his wife. âSheâs a Delaney, my dear. Just the same as I am.â
Lenore stared at him, started to speak, and clamped her lips shut.
âI just donât believe it!â Kaitlin said. âItâs just David. Heâs called with this jest to yank our chains. I mean, all right, Seamus wants to see Kit. Heâs filled with remorse over all the arguments and the fact that Marina died here. But David must be aware thatâ¦well, that no one else could possibly want her around!â
âDoes anyone matter but Seamus?â Josh asked lightly.
At that moment, the phone rang. Michael strode past his still-stiff wife to answer it. âHello?â
âMichael, itâs Shelley. David just called, and told me about Kit, then put me on the phone with her. Iâm so excited. I was thinking about planning a party forwhen they come homeâexcept that I donât want to step on any toes. I thought that you might want to plan the party. Isnât it wonderful? Itâs just incredible. After everything that happened, Kit will still be coming back here to live. Isnât it just great?â
âWho is it, Michael?â
