Tom.
âSo maybe you can do that again.â
âI donât know what he wants.â
âDonât second-guess it. Just make the most of his visit. You never know. He might be ready to settle down and want to join our pack, if he doesnât cause trouble.â
Peter looked back at Elizabeth. âWhat about her?â Now he sounded really interested.
âKind of a mystery.â But Tomâs mystery. Not any other bachelor maleâs in the pack. âGot to get back to her. Are you all right now?â
âYeah, thanks.â
Tom glanced at the other men. They dipped their heads a little in silent acknowledgment that they could step in now and help out. Two rose from the table and walked over to join Peter.
The banker said, âDo you mind if we join you?â
âIâd like that. Thanks, Mason.â
Reassured Peter would be okay, Tom returned to his own table.
âOkay, so you want the usual and⦠Elizabeth?â Silva said. She brought out a pad and pen. She didnât need to use them, but it was part of her presentation.
âRoast beef sandwich sound good?â Tom asked Elizabeth, surprised she hadnât already placed an order. Then again, sheâd been watching him, studying him. He hoped she liked what she saw.
âSure,â Elizabeth said.
âAnd to drink?â he asked.
Elizabeth gave a little snort. âMake it milk.â
Silva glanced at her wrist. âBreak?â
âSprain. But I figure that milk helps to keep the bones strong if I fall down mountains in the future.â
Silva smiled at her. âIâm Silva, by the way. Iâm the proud owner of the Victorian Tea Shop.â
Sam scowled as he watched them, then turned to dry more glasses.
âI take it Samâs not happy about this,â Tom said. Silva had waitressed at the tavern forever, even though with their longevity, she was only twenty-eight in human years.
âNope,â Silva said. âItâs time I had a place of my own. Iâll waitress over there and Iâll be the owner. Which means I can decorate it to my heartâs content. If you hang around long enough,â she said to Elizabeth, âyou can come to the grand opening.â
âThanks. Maybe I can come back some other time.â
Silva glanced at Tom as if he was supposed to keep Elizabeth here a while longer, if nothing else, to ensure that Elizabeth came to her grand opening.
Elizabeth cleared her throat uncomfortably and asked Silva, âDo you ski?â
Silva laughed and said, âIâve only been up to the ski resort one time. I went to the ski lodge and had a hot toddy.â She shrugged. âIf wolves were meant to ski, they wouldnât have nonslip paw pads.â She paused before she left to place their orders. âYouâre staying overnight, at least, arenât you?â
âYeah. I am.â
Silva gave her a big smile. âYouâve got to meet Darienâs mate, Lelandi. Sheâd love to visit with you.â
âI think weâll see her tonight.â
Silva glanced at Tom. âGood. Sounds real good. Iâll get your food.â She headed for the bar.
Sam shoved a tray on the counter, two sandwiches already on the plates, along with a beer and one glass of milk.
âWhy thank you, Sam. That was quick.â
He grunted at her.
Silva whipped around and brought the tray to Tom and Elizabethâs table. âHeâs mad at me,â she whispered to them, âbecause Iâm leaving him to work my own place and he has to find a new waitress. Iâve got new horizons.â
âSometimes we have to spread our wings,â Elizabeth agreed. âSometimes itâs time to take a chance and make some big changes in our lives.â
âYou sound like you speak from experience,â Tom said.
Elizabeth looked uncomfortable, then shook her head. âSilva sounds like sheâs in a place where she
