held hands and looked at each other’s eyes. As we did, we stared at the crowd. My mamma had tears in her eyes. Maybe she was finally opening up to Evan. I also saw Evan’s mom, crying as well. A few seats over was Evan’s dad. He had a grumpy look on his haggard face, but I could see through him pretending to be grumpy. I knew, deep down in his heart, that he was proud of his boy.
After that show, the ceremony continued. Everyone got their degrees, and then the headmaster said, “And now, you have graduated!”
With that, everyone threw their caps in the air, and we all went to our families. There was celebration, but also a bittersweet feeling in our guts. We were about to face the real world, filled with trials, tribulations, and many other things along the way. Would I be successful? Would Evan be there for me until death do we part? Life can never give you a full answer, even if you think we have it figured out. That’s what my mamma always said.
But as I looked at Evan and he looked back at me, we knew that whatever lied ahead for us, we were going to face it together. We raised our hands to the sky and the two of us went to Evan’s car. We drove off into our next life together, and even though I don’t know what lies ahead for us, I know it’s going to be grand.
