sputtered into his mic. Across the way, Brenda Mitchell grabbed her daughter’s arm while Kerri gasped in horror.
The only one not responding was Joshua Payne, who stood with his arms crossed.
“Oh my God,” Ronnie muttered, while campaigners lit up in anguish behind them. “Steel yourself, Hunter.”
“What proof do you have of this hogwash?” Raymond finally said. By now the security guards were coming down on the reporter, while the campaigners behind Hunter debated whether or not he was supposed to be there. “Don’t dare sully my daughter’s good name!”
The man managed to pull a stack of photographs out of the manila envelope before he could be caught and hauled away. “See for yourself, Governor.” The photos fluttered to the floor.
People scrambled out of their seats to get a look, but the first ones there were reporters running up from the front row. A woman in a red suit and big blond hair picked up the photo nearest her and exclaimed into her mic, “Could this be photoshopped?”
More chaos, more yelling. Raymond stepped out from behind his podium while his campaign manager implored him to stop. But a father on the warpath would not let anyone get in the way between him and evidence of his daughter’s betrayal.
He took one look at the nearest photo and proceeded to upturn Terrence’s podium.
“Your bastard son!” he cried, while flashbulbs lit up around them. Paul jumped out from behind the curtain and grabbed Terrence by the shoulders. By now, someone was grabbing Hunter and pulling him out of his seat as well. It was a security guard with orders to remove him from the premises for his own protection.
The last thing Hunter heard before he disappeared behind a screen and toward a car was his father ranting about scum reporters; the last thing he felt was his cell phone vibrating in his pocket. Kerri. Hunter tried to break free from the security guards in order to find his love.
Wherever she was, it was probably a similar hell to this.
