going to be about. They had loads of facts â but what were they going to do with them?
âBecky,â asked Jack, politely, but giving Robin a watch out, I could be taking my life into my hands here kind of look. âHave you got all that stuff about our school? Maybe we could do something about how itâs changed?â
Becky nervously scrabbled through her folder, and Annabel and Katie gazed at each other in a kind of horrified delight.
âItâs a good idea, but thatâs the problem â I think everyone will do that,â said Fran worriedly. âIt would be nice to be different âoh!â She broke off and squeaked in delight. âBecky, that looks just like Feathers, is that your dog? You didnât say you had one as well!â She leafed eagerly through the album.
Becky was completely confused. âI â no. Thatâs â oh, youâll laugh. I donât even know what itâs doing in here!â She looked shyly at Fran and the others. âYouâll think Iâm really stupid.â Then she thought, Oh, who cares, they probably do anyway .âI havenât got a dog at all â these ones are from magazines. Theyâre the kind of dog Iâd love to have one day. Youâre so lucky,â she told Fran enviously. âHave you seen her dog?â she asked Jack and Robin. They shook their heads. âWell, heâs just like that â only gorgeouser.â
âAnd normally muddier,â grinned Fran. âYou may think heâs gorgeous. Wait till heâs dragged youover a few molehills.â
They all laughed â and Becky joined in.
âSo why donât you have a dog?â asked Fran.
âTwo cats,â explained Becky. âAnd my mum says sheâs got enough to look after with the three of us, without a dog too. Iâm working on her, though. Iâm sure the cats could cope.â
Katie and Annabel watched gleefully as they all chatted â it was working! Becky caught them staring, and gave a small, hesitant smile, which got her two big grins in return. She pointed Katie and Annabel out to Fran and the others. âI think those two put the album in there to make me talk to you.â She gave an embarrassed grin, and looked round the three of them, even daring to catch Jack and Robinâs eyes. âIâm not used to not having them to work with â sorry Iâve been a bit, um, weird.â
âA bit? We thought you were off your head!â smirked Jack, until Fran cuffed him on the shoulder.
âIgnore him. He thinks heâs funny. If youâve always had your sisters around I can see it would be scary. But youâre OK now?â
âMmm.â Becky nodded shyly, and smiled at Fran.
âWell, thatâs good, âcause Iâm not,â snapped Jack. âThat really hurt, I could tell Miss Fraser, you know!â
Becky turned her sweet smile on him. âWould you really? Youâd tell her a girl hit you?â she asked, very nicely, but trembling inside that she was daring to talk back to him â this was such an Annabel thing to say. . .
Jack shuffled crossly in his seat. âWell, maybe not. I think I liked you better when you werenât talking,â he added grumpily.
âShut up, Jack, Iâve just had a brilliant idea,â said Robin, sounding pleased with himself. âWe all like animals, donât we? Iâve got a dog, too.â
The others nodded.
âYeah, Iâve got a lizard,â Jack offered, forgetting to stay cross. âWhy?â
âWell, why donât we do our project on animals, then?â Robin looked quite excited. âAbout how theyâve been part of our townâs history. You know, carthorses, that sort of thing â thereâs loads of animals in these pictures. No lizards though, Jack.â
âCarrier pigeons during the war,â suggested Becky enthusiastically.
âDid
