dusting herself off. âI mean, I canât control it.â
âJesus, girl, do you even know where you are?â
She looked around and hugged herself as she shook her head. âA haunted forest?â Her tone was sarcastic.
âNot that lucky, Iâm afraid,â Brendan said.
âWhy are you tied up?â she asked, taking a few steps forward. She narrowed her eyes, focusing to see him in the perpetual faint light.
âThatâs a bit of a long story, that is,â he said. âAnd not one to be telling a kid.â
âTrust me, mister,â she said. âMy story isnât exactly rainbows and unicorns either.â
Brendan didnât know what to say. He could see it in her eyes; hear the truth of her words. They were soaked in sadness and regret. It was something all too familiar to him.
âI have a knife,â she said. âI could cut you downâÂOh my god!â Her eyes went wide when she got close enough to see his injuries. âYouâre hurt! Really bad!â
âAye, I noticed that,â Brendan said. âBut you canât cut me loose, love. It ainât safe. Not for you or anyone else.â
She kept stepping forward, her eyes looking him over. âWas it the Order?â
âThe who?â
âYou didnât, um, do this to yourself, did you?â
Brendan shrugged, or tried to. âAye, though not directly.â
Her face scrunched in confusion. âI have no idea what that means.â
He shook his head. âItâs not important. What is, is that you get your arse out of here, and right bleeding now.â
âI told you, I canât control the wormholes,â she said and ran her hands through her hair. âIâve been jumping all over the place for what feels like weeks.â
âWormholes? What the hell are you talking about?â
She nodded. âYou see, there are countless holes in space-Âtime on the subatomic level, though I only shift through spaceâÂat least, I think.â She shook her head. âAnyway, somehow Iâm manipulating the chance that these holes will join together and form one large enough to reach the macro universe andâÂâ
âIâve got no bleeding clue what youâre saying, girl.â
âSorry.â She shrugged. âAnd my nameâs Wraith, not girl. Whatâs yours?â
He hesitated for a long while before deciding there was no harm in it. âBrendan,â he said. âFine then, Wraith, if you canât go back, can you make yourself invisible again? Hide until you figure out how to go back?â
âMaybe?â she said. âI mean, it just sort of happens, I donât really control it either, but Iâm trying. And Iâm sure Iâll stride again, I always do. I just donât know when.â She looked down. âBut you shouldnât be close by when I do. Letâs just say it would be really bad.â
Inside, the demon was drawing what little strength there was and fighting for control. Brendan was pushing it back down, but he was losing.
âYou have to goâÂâ
âI told youâÂâ
âFrom here,â Brendan said. âFrom me!â
Wraith stepped a little closer, tilting her head to try and see his eyes. âWhy? Youâre hurt really bad and tied to a tree. I donât think you could hurt me, even if I did cut you down.â
âIâve got no time to explain, love,â Brendan said. âTrust me when I sayâÂâ There was pain as the demon fought its way up.
âIâm sorry. I was wrong,â it said through Brendanâs mouth. âItâs the pain you see. Iâm not thinking straight. Please, free me. Youâre right, I wonât hurt youâÂâ
Brendan pushed back, wrenching the monster from control. âDonât listen to me, go, now! Go and donât ever come back, or tell anyone you
