breathing or not? He found her
pulse and held his hand over her mouth to feel the air moving there.
She was doing just fine.
There
was a knock on the door. He rose to answer the door himself.
Zufu
stayed by Amber's other side.
“ Good
morning, doctor.” Rokai stepped aside so he could enter.
The
doctor slowly did. “How is she?”
“ She's
still sleeping.”
The
doctor checked her pulse and listened to her heart. She was alive and
stronger than last night. She could pull through. “Has she woken at
all yet?”
“ Not
yet. She moves now and then, but she hasn't spoken. She is still very
tired. It was a very long trip to get here. She needs a couple of
days to adjust to the new climate.”
“ Yes,
something like that can take weeks, sometimes even months. She needs
lots of time,” the doctor agreed with him. Several Emkos had been
visiting his in his spacecraft. They were waiting on him and talking
to him about their ways. He got the idea that if the masters on this
planet liked him that he could live here permanently. The Emko could
teach him and he could do well, being a good doctor and still living
a relaxed life.
“ I
would like to listen to her heart. Sit her up so I may, please.”
The doctor looked at Zufu to help him.
“ No,
I'll help you.” He lifted his Amber gently into his arms.
The
girl wasn't even conscience. When he moved her she looked like a rag
doll even though he was being so careful. He hoped that she would
live. He had the Emko catch one of the wetu so he could test its
poison, discovering that they were the most poisonous creatures still
alive in the universe. They were a danger to everyone on the planet.
The
doctor looked her back over. He felt along her arms and ribs. She
needs to be moving around more, her muscles are very tight. “She
will need massages, often.”
Both
Rokai and Zufu nodded.
The
doctor had Rokai move her so he could check the other side. He
checked her neck muscles and found them to be in need of attention.
Rokai
went right to work.
The
doctor checked her legs and feet.
“ Her
foot is rapidly getting better. She is very lucky that the Emko were
there and knew what to do. My research has shown that just removing
to foot wouldn't help cure her. The poison is in her blood. Only she
can get the poison out of her body with fever. Has she been
drinking?”
“ No,
she isn't awake to drink.”
The
doctor wasn't sure what to do about that. “She needs to be
drinking. If she wakes up she should drink something right away. She
may have to throw up. She probably will. I will leave medicine for
her. She will be in a lot of pain then. Call me. If she doesn't wake
up soon – I need to know if she wakes up, even if she just wakes
up for a minute. Make sure she drinks something then. Have something
ready. She shouldn't be left alone at all. Someone should sit with
her.”
“ I'll
do that,” Rokai offered right away. She should see him first when
she woke up. She would see that he was taking care of her, no matter
what kind of stupid stuff she did. He still held her in his arms.
Maybe he should carry her around like he did on the spacecraft;
possibly she would even wake up for him then.
“ She
needs lots of rest. She shouldn't even stand up and sitting up only
with lots of help.” He looked over the girl. It would probably be a
miracle if she lived. The creature was just so poisonous. Perhaps it
would be better for her if she had died. He didn't like the thought
of her being in pain. “Call me as soon as she wakes up.” He left
them, hoping that he had sounded like her waking was a sure thing.
The woman had to live for him to get a secure position on this
planet.
Rokai
went to work trying to get Amber's sore muscles to relax. He started
with her right hand and worked his way up her arm, gently rubbing and
stroking.
Zufu
excused herself to get something to drink for Amber. She wanted to
get to know her mistress. Zufu thought that she was the most
beautiful
