so.â
âI knew youâd understand,â Nuala said, her eyes gleaming. âNow we just have to convince your sister.â

B reanne was sitting cross-legged on the bed when Nuala brought Mackenzie back from the courtyard.
âI have to leave you for a while,â Nuala said from the doorway. âIâll have some food sent in while Iâm gone. Eat up while you canâthereâs no banquet tonight. Tonight we ride.â
âWhat is that supposed to mean, âTonight we rideâ?â Breanne asked after Nuala was gone. âAnd where were you?â
âWhere were you ?â said Mackenzie.
âLooking for a way out of here. Where did you think I was?â Breanne punched the pillow in her lap. âSheâs delusional if she thinks she can keep me in here forever.â
âWe need to talk,â Mackenzie said.
âIâm serious, Iâm not going to be anyoneâs prisoner.â
Mackenzie yanked her sisterâs pillow away. âListen to me, Breanne!â
âWhat?â Breanne asked angrily.
Mackenzie took a breath. âI would never leave you behind,â she said through gritted teeth. âBut you keep taking off on me, your sister, your twin sister.â
Breanne shrugged. âI donât know what youâre getting so excited about. You were asleep. Besides, youâre too chicken to go anywhere anyway.â
âWhat Iâm getting excited about?â Mackenzie threw up her hands angrily. âSisters are supposed to stick together, Breanne! Thatâs why Iâm here in the first place, because I came with you! Because I wouldnât let you go off by yourself and get lost!â
âSo you shouldnât have followed me then,â Breanne said with contempt. âYour mistake.â
âMy mistake ? I fell into a river trying to save your life , Breanne! And itâs not the first time.â
âNot the first time that you fell into a river?â
âThat I saved your life, you moron!â Mackenzie stomped across the room and sat down hard on the canopy bed. âRemember that night at the stones five years ago? There was something thereâa Pooka! It shot you with a dart, in the ankle. If I hadnât been there to drag you down the hill, it would have caught you for sure!â
âI was there,â said Breanne. âThere was no Pooka . Youâre the one who wrecked my ankle when you yanked me so hard!â
âThatâs not what happened,â said Mackenzie. âNuala showed me, in the pool.â
Breanne snorted. âWhat pool?â
âA pool of solstice fireâthe stuff from the solstice cup. I saw everything that happened that night.â
âOh, really?â Breanne said sarcastically.
âYes, really! It was like watching a movie. Plus the solstice fire has healing properties. Nuala said if you drank it, your leg would be back to normal.â
Breanneâs eyebrows disappeared under her bangs. âAre you kidding me? Last night we couldnât drink from the solstice cup because the piper guy said weâd turn into zombie slaves. Now Nuala says âdrink up,â and suddenly you want to do what she says. Which is it, Mackenzie? Too bad we canât call Mom and ask her opinion, since you canât seem to think for yourself.â
âThatâs not fair,â Mackenzie said angrily. âI saw the bird get healed! It had a broken wing, and Nuala put it in the pool and the wing was fixed, just like that. There was no more blood or anything!â
âJust like that,â Breanne repeated in a mocking voice. âSo what are you saying? You think we should drink a little âsolstice fireâ after all?â
Mackenzie crossed her arms. âI donât know ! Iâm just telling you what I saw. I was trying to help you!â
They were interrupted by the sound of footsteps outside the room. One of
