you believe that heâd be interested in moving on to another woman? I mean, it sounds like he had a thing for the old one.â
âIt wasnât a love relationship,â Venus said. âAchillesâ pride was hurt by Briseis being taken, not his heart.â
âHow can you be so sure?â Jacky asked.
âAgamemnon told me that Briseisâs beauty was wasted on Achilles,â Hera said.
âGreat. Kat, heâs gay,â Jacky said.
âGay?â Athena looked utterly confused.
âAchilles is not gay,â Venus said.
âGay?â Athena repeated, tapping her foot in annoyance.
âIt means he only shtups other men,â Jacky explained.
âShtups means fuââ
âI understand what that means,â Athena said. âAnd I agree with Venus. Achilles is not gay. But he hasnât taken a lover in many years, so Briseis was definitely not his lover.â
âHow do you know that?â Venus said.
âHis mother told me,â Athena said.
âWhy no lover?â Kat asked.
âOh, thatâs easy to explain,â Athena said. âHe frightens maidens.â
âWhy?â Jacky asked, looking more than a little alarmed.
âThe berserker rage scares them. Apparently it comes upon him when a passionate emotion is arousedâbe it lust or anger,â Athena said.
âYes, and maidens from the ancient world are not equipped to handle such a man, but I know that modern mortal women are differentâstronger, smarter, more independent. Also, I heard you say that you counsel men as part of your living. Thatâs why I chose you.â Venus finished with a big smile for Kat.
âWell, itâs not just men I counsel. Actually itâs mostly couples whose marriages are in trouble.â
Venus waved her hands dismissively. âItâs all the same. I also heard you described as very optimistic. And you said that you like men. See, youâre perfect for this job.â
âAnd she says she wasnât spying on you,â Jacky said.
Athena suddenly added, âThetis mentioned something about Achillesâ horribly scarred visage frightening maidens, too.â
âI didnât know Achilles was scarred,â Venus said.
âNeither did I,â Hera said.
Athena shrugged. âApparently theyâre battle scars. Thetis said the berserker rage hasnât always come upon him easily.â
âWell, that could be a good thing. It shows that he needs a trigger to make it happen. If I can get him to identify the trigger, then maybe he can disarm it,â Kat said. âSounds like Anger Management 101.â
âInteresting . . . You do not seem troubled by the fact that he is scarred,â Athena said.
Jacky answered before Kat could. âAs Venus keeps tellinâ you, modern women are different. It takes more than a few scars to put us off.â
âIâd like to think that I have the ability to see beyond the physical,â Kat said.
âDitto,â Jacky said. Then she pointed down at her body. âPresent company excepted. God, do I have to be wearing pink? I hate pink.â
âIt looks good on you, though. You really are very pretty, Jacky,â Kat said.
âPretty white,â Jacky muttered.
âNo, really. Is there a mirror around here?â she asked Venus.
âEleithyia, darling, could you bring us a lovely looking glass?â
The priestess hurried off and returned quickly with a medium-sized round mirror, framed in bronze. Kat took it from her and held it so Jacky could look at herself.
âSee?â
Jackyâs eyes got huge. Her hands went up to her hair. âMy dear sweet baby Jesus, I have tresses . Long, flowing, curling, blond tresses .â
âTheyâre pretty,â Kat said.
âTheyâre fucking overwhelming. You know I have not one clue how to take care of white girl hair. Especially not this much white girl
