Part One
Chapter
one
My
secretary was on the intercom informing me of the day's engagements.
It was going to be a busy day doing lots of talking, which was
something I had yet to become accustomed to.
As
the president it was my duty to face the public and conduct
interviews with annoying reporters, but it was for a good cause. The
scandal I had unearthed with StarLink had been the launching pad of
No Souls for Sale; a Non Profit Organization designed to make the
public aware of human trafficking in America.
My
name was now Akemi Coverly. Getting my papers sorted out and becoming
a citizen of the USA was almost as difficult as gaining my freedom.
It's amazing when the cameras shut off just how brutal the
authorities can be. If I didn’t have a spirit of resilience I would
surely have broken. One official went so far as to suggest that I was
here of my own accord and had actually been peddling my ‘wares’
without the controls of slavery.
Equally
as amazing was the power of money. As soon as Shaun was named
rightful owner of TecCorp and by extension, a multi-billionaire, all
my legal issues miraculously vanished. My documentation and social
security number were finalized in a heart beat.
My
sister was my next concern, and again the power of money spoke. She
too was now a legal citizen of the USA, and we both were enjoying
life in a way we had never experienced before.
My
husband, Shaun Coverly, was a gem of a man. Never once making me feel
like my past was a burden for me alone to bear. Many nights I stayed
up late, crying, remembering the atrocities of my life and even
indulging in self blame for the whole ordeal. Maybe I should have
fought back, maybe I should have used my free days to flee, maybe…
Life
for me now was different but yet, the same. Shaun spared no expense
when it came to my happiness. Anything a woman could want from a man,
he provided. The lifestyle of luxury I had become accustomed to now
had the added benefit of love and company. Though he was a
workaholic, Shaun understood the value of our relationship and made
time for me in his busy schedule. Our honeymoon to the Caribbean was
epic for many reasons; it was the first time I traveled outside of
the States and it was the first time we were truly alone. Away from
the media, away from prying eyes, away from the reminders of my past
life. The island was quiet and quaint and our lovemaking, loud and
passionate. This was the story of my new life.
I
was a bit groggy today. Last night Shaun and I went to a unique
couples therapy. The therapist was new to LA and anyone who was
someone was trying to get an appointment. Fortunately, we never had
to call anyone to solicit their business; they always called us. I
was in a particularly good mood the day she called and that was how
she snuck past my gate keeper and bulldog of a secretary who knew how
I felt about intrusions into my life.
“ Mrs.
Coverly, this is Camilla Alexis from Heal the Heart, how are you
today? ”
“ I’m
well Ms. Alexis, Jenna said you needed to speak to me personally on
a subject. Do you have information on a matter that pertains to my
organization or myself? ”
“ Well,
it's more personal than business related. I’ve been following your
story on the news since I’ve been in town and I just feel awful
about your ordeal. It’s a subject so dear to my heart and I would
love to offer you and your husband a complimentary session at my
healing spa. Is it something you would consider?”
This
was a sales pitch and she knew it. Once we recommend people to her
she would never lack for business again. It was a surefire way to
give her notoriety and prestige amongst the rich.
“ Well,
exactly what do your therapies include, Ms. Alexis? ”
“ It's
not something I can discuss over the phone Mrs. Coverly, but I can
assure you that you will never be the same again. It brings release
and confirmation that the partner you’ve chosen is definitely the
one for you.”
