have it if I gave it to you for a while if you asked for it.â
âWe wonât keep it long,â King said, reaching for it. He thought the urgency inside him should have eased, now that they had figured out the next step along the path that Blake had prepared for them before drowning. But it was the opposite. Each step might be one step closer to King learning something he didnât want to learn about his dad. Besides, holding the stuffed dog didnât exactly give him any ideaof what the remote control was for. Maybe something hidden inside the stuffing?
King turned it over, looking for a seam or stitching that might show that Blake had hidden something inside the stuffed dog. He shouldnât have done it in front of Samantha, but the urgency seemed to be at a boil.
Maybe the remote control would make the dog move. Or make something inside the dog beep to let him know it was there.
King pulled the remote control from his pocket, pointed, and clicked.
âWhereâs the nearest fire hydrant?â It was Blakeâs voice coming from the tiny speaker that hung from the dogâs collar.
âCool,â Samantha said. âHowâd you do that?â
CHAPTER 18
âIâve never been in an airplane,â King told Johnson. âAnd Iâve never admitted that to anyone. Except you. Now.â
âNo biggie,â Johnson said. âI wonât tell anyone.â
They were on the front porch at Kingâs house. Steady rain dripping on the overhang above. But feeling no chill. The evening was warm.
âThatâs not my point,â King said. âItâs not a big deal that I havenât been on an airplane. Lots of kids havenât been on airplanes. Itâs nothing to be ashamed of.â
âYet youâve kept this a dark secret.â
âNot dark. Just a secret. Because of how bad I want to be in an airplane. Iâve been on this island my entire life. Trips sometimes to Seattle, but thatâs it. Like my parents cocooned me here. Iâm busting to break out.â
âGoing to get all sentimental here, like you want wings?â Johnson asked. âBecome a beautiful butterfly?â
âI think this is a good example of why guys rarely share feelings,â King said.
âMy point too. See how I managed to end the conversation? Now we donât have to share feelings.â
âSo let me tell you why I was thinking about airplanes,â King told him. He was talking a lot and knew why. They were waiting for the iPhone to ping. The one on the table between them. Blakeâs iPhone. King didnât like the silence.
âNot because you feel like singing a ballad about finding your true self someday?â
â Sky Mall magazine. You heard of it? Itâs on airplanes. People can shop while theyâre flying.â
âWhen I was little,â Johnson said in a dreamy voice, âI wanted to be a ballerina...â
âYou made your point already with the butterfly thing.â
ââ¦until I found out you had to be a girl to be a ballerina.â
King snorted. âGo ahead and tell people I havenât been on an airplane. It will be worth the trade. Because Iâm going to love telling them about ballerinas.â
âDreams are fragile,â Johnson answered.
King was impressed that he couldnât tell if Johnson was serious or not.
âSo Iâm thinking,â King said. âBlake got his ideas from a Sky Mall magazine.â
This snapped Johnson into full attention. He glanced at the iPhone and then back to King.
âSo when I was googling invisible ink and a special flashlight, it took me to the Sky Mall website. Guess what. Thatâs where I had seen Measles before. Sky Mall sells stuffed dogs with a voice recorder and remote. You can record anything you want.â
âLike âWhereâs the nearest fire hydrant?â and âDonât eat yellow
