he was lost in his own thoughts, perhaps thinking over the various signs that he had overlooked.
“Hey, don't feel bad,” I said, reaching out and taking his hand. “He tricked me too. He is apparently really good at reading people and giving them what they want until it is time for him to stab you in the back. He is a manipulator.”
Dex nodded. “I know. I wish I had acted on my intuitions before he attacked you. When I saw him with you last night, I heard warning bells in my head, but I was mostly still so annoyed with you that I dismissed them. I thought maybe it was just anger at him for breaking the code, but it was something more. I knew there was more to him than what he was presenting. I knew he was a snake. But I didn't warn you. I'm sorry.”
I nodded and gave his hand a squeeze. “I...have an apology to make as well. What I said to you yesterday was mean and unnecessary. And I was really only hanging around Peter last night to try and piss you off,” I finished sheepishly.
Dex grinned. “Ha! I knew you were trying to make me jealous!” he exclaimed triumphantly.
“Did it work?” I asked, batting my eyelashes at him.
“Oh, is that the game you want to play?” he asked. “Well, I'm not really worried about any competition. Honey, I like this game and I'm going to win. You can't resist me.” I laughed with him and finally felt really relaxed and happy. Maybe Dex wasn't so bad after all.
The waitress came over with our giant plates of food. It smelled incredible. I had made the right choice in letter Dex order. Clearly, he knew what he was doing. He knew about so many different places, and all I knew was my little town that no one outside of Nebraska had even heard of before. After we scarfed down most of the delicious, piping hot food, Dex dropped some money on the table and we hurried back to the motel to meet up with the rest of the club.
They had already dealt with Peter. Jason whispered something in Dex's ear and Dex nodded and slapped him on the back. No one said anything to me about what had happened or what they had done with Peter. I was grateful to not have to talk about him.
We all climbed up on the bikes and took off towards the main highway for another full day of riding.
Chapter 7
Betrayed
Despite my soreness and pain, I managed to enjoy the morning on the bike. We passed by a few small towns but mostly the highway went straight through the countryside. I admired the farms and the untouched wilderness as we passed. It was refreshing to just not worry and enjoy the scenery. When we passed any particularly interesting landmarks, Dex would shout out their history or interesting tidbits of information. I was surprised and impressed by his extensive knowledge of obscure bits of history and geography. I felt a twinge of guilt for judging his intelligence and education so quickly. I had just assumed a guy in a motorcycle club who looked the way Dex looked couldn't possibly be very intelligent.
I also found myself enjoying the way it felt to have his body pressed so close to mine. I even found a few excuses to pull myself tight and feel the warmth of his back pressed against my chest when we took any sharp turns. The him of the bike between my legs and Dex's muscular back pressed against my chest were sending sharp little thrills into my core. I couldn't help squirming, enjoying the buzzing feeling inside me. It was a beautiful day and I started to understand the appeal of riding a motorcycle across the country like this. It felt like freedom in a way I had never experienced before. I didn't want it to end. We needed to make up for the lost time that morning, so lunch was a quick pit stop.
While chomping down on my soggy sandwich, I finally asked Dex where we were going.
“Texas,” was his short reply. I had never been to Texas before and I couldn't wait to see it.
“Where in Texas? Any reason we are going there?” I asked, remembering Peter's vague accusations.
