parent,â Adam said.
âOrâ¦?â Zee coaxed.
âOr a big brother.â
âThanks.â
Outside, Zee opened the door to Adamâs car. She carefully picked up an old cheese-globbed burger wrapper and added it to the collection in the backseat. There was no way she was going to mess up her brand-new denim miniskirtâDad said it was okay to wear since she had on a pair of leggings underneathâbecause of her brotherâs revolting habits. âYou know, they actually make trash cans now,â Zee said.
âIf youâd rather not get a ride, thatâs okay with me,â Adam said.
âNo, itâs fine,â she told him. âIâll just avoid making contact with any surfaces.â
As Zee buckled her seat belt, she got a text message. âItâs Chloe,â she told her brother.
âWeâre not late, are we?â
Zee read the message. âWe donât need to pick her up for the concert.â
âWhy not?â
Zee stared at the wordsâ
>I canât go 2nite. Sorry.
âShe didnât say.â Frustrated, Zee dropped her Sidekick into her purse and stared at the car window. Why couldnât Chloe go? she wondered. Half the time, Zee could almost read Allyâs mindâand the other half of the time, Ally told her everything . It was different with Chloe. Was she hiding something from Zee?
Â
Just as the girls had discussed, Kathi and Jen were waiting by the main gate. Even from a distance, Zee could see the passes, spread out like a fan, in Kathiâs hands.
âI loooooove your hair!â Kathi said as Zee got close. Zee turned around to look behind her, but besides Adam, no one else was there.
âMe?â Zee asked, pointing to herself.
âOf course, you,â Kathi said. âWho else would I mean?â
Everybody, Zee thought. Although Kathi had been way nicer to her over the past week, she had never complimented Zeeâs style before.
âIâve always admired the color,â Kathi said. âItâsâ¦â She turned to Jen.
âVivid,â Jen said. âLike a penny!â
âExactly.â Kathi nodded and smiled. Then she looked around. âWhereâs Chloe?â
âShe couldnât come,â Zee explained.
âWhy not?â Kathi asked.
âI donât know,â Zee said.
âDidnât she tell you?â Kathi pressed.
âNo.â
âYouâre like her best friend.â Kathi made a face like sheâd just bitten into a lemon. âDonât you think thatâs weird?â
Zee did, but how could she say that? Chloe was her friendâat least she thought so. âIâ¦uhâ¦donât think she had time.â
Kathi handed Jen and Zee their tickets, then walked over toward where Adam was standingâten feet away. âOh no!â Zee shouted, chasing after her. âHe has his own ticket for the lawn.â
âHe might as well use Chloeâs ticket since sheâs not here,â Kathi said, flashing him a princess-perfect smile. âBesides, seniors shouldnât have to sit on the lawn.â
From behind Kathiâs and Jenâs backs, Zee looked at her brother and stiffly shook her head in an urgent no. Adam plucked the ticket from Kathiâs hand. âThank you, Kathi.â Then he whispered to Zee, âYou donât expect me to pass up a front row seat, do you?â
âYes!â Zee hissed back, her eyes growing wide with panic.
âIâll make it up to you. I promise.â
âLetâs go get some food before we sit down,â Kathi suggested.
âGreat idea!â Adam said.
As they walked toward the concession stand, Zee nudged Adam in the ribs.
Adam got the hint. âGet me some buffalo wings!â he called out, dropping behind. âWith extra sauce.â Zee gave him a thumbs-up.
When the girls got to the food line, Kathi turned to Zee and said,
