to protect his heart from getting broken.
Maybe it was the alcohol, but Sam had thought maybe he and Abby were connecting on a deeper level. She didn’t seem like other women he had been with. Perhaps that was why he felt drawn to her because she was different.
Sam drew in a deep breath. “I think so,” he admitted, replaying the vivid image engraved into his mind of their night together.
Abby groaned again and slapped her palm to her forehead.
Sam winced at her reaction, but asked, “Do you want to hear the details? Or not?”
She took a deep breath, then answered. “Tell me.”
“Well, you were quite funny. Making a lot of cute jokes and witty come-backs. Charming. Then later on, as we were leaving the hotel bar, you bet me that I couldn’t steal a kiss. I know it wasn’t very gentlemanly of me, but I wasn’t about to turn down an opportunity to kiss a beautiful woman. But in my defence, I only intended a kiss. Nothing more.”
His mind travelled back to the night before when she had leaned in towards him, pushing her body against his, making it impossible to say no. The feel of her pressed against him had his manhood was begging for more. Her hands had wrapped around his neck, and when her lips found his, he hadn’t wanted it ever to end. When their lips parted and they were both looking into the other’s eyes, he had so hoped that maybe she wanted him too.
Then in one swift and impulsive move, their mouths had fused together once more. They stripped each other of their clothes and fell as one onto the bed. They stayed entwined for most of the night, giving each other one hell of a thrill ride and lots of fun. He had had some fun with her last night—more fun than he could remember in a long time.
Sam shook the erotic memories from his head before they got excited him again. He didn’t think Abby would appreciate that right now.
“So we did have sex?” Abby prompted impatiently.
“We did. It was great—I mean you were great,” Sam corrected. “And I just want to go on record as saying you never once seemed too intoxicated to know what you were doing. I didn’t intend to advantage of you, Abby. You seemed very alert and into it.” He didn’t want her to think he was one to have sex with an unconscious woman.
Abby was half–ashamed, and yet part of her was delighted to know that her drunken self-had taken advantage of being with Sam. She just wished she had the memories to relive over and over. He was a sexy man. And honest. In fact, he was the total package if she was looking for a boyfriend. But she wasn’t. Especially not one who was a brother to her sister’s fiancé.
Her sister. Jessica had to be wondering where the heck she was right now. It was time to go back and confront the disappointing looks of her siblings. She couldn’t avoid Jessica forever. She also couldn’t hide out in Sam’s hotel room no matter how much she wanted to or how comfortable his bed was.
Abby leaned her head back against the headboard, scanning the room for her belongings, scattered across the floor.
“Wow!” Abby exclaimed. “I’m not usually this messy.” Abby held the comforter around her naked body with one hand as she used her other free hand to scoop up her dress and underwear.
Sam blinked and stared at her. “So you’re okay. You’re not upset or anything?”
“What’s done is done,” Abby replied. “I’m not one to cry over spilt milk.” She kept her tone matter-of-factly, not wanting to give Sam any indication she wanted a repeat performance.
Sam gave her one last inquiring look, and when she smiled reassuringly, he took it as his cue to leave her alone.
“I’ll leave you to get dressed,” he said before crossing to the other side of the room where the door was.
Abby had thanked him before he disappeared out of the room.
Unwrapping the comforter from around her body, Abby returned it to the bed. She slipped on her underwear, then her dress. She could do with a shower and
