firm muscles.
âOh, wait, maybe sheâll be at the party tonight,â I said. Wouldnât that be interesting? I wondered if I needed to warn Paige so she wouldnât get her heart broken.
âShe will be,â Joe said.
âHow do you know?â
âI just know.â
âYou sure âjust knowâ a lot of stuff.â
âYep.â
âMaybe you can make a move on her at the party.â
âI doubt it.â
âWhy?â
âSheâs not interested in me.â
âHow can she not be interested?â
He spun around. I came up short, almost barreling into him.
âYou tell me,â he demanded.
âTell you what?â
âHow she cannot be interested? Or better yet, why would she be interested?â
âYouâre nice.â
He grimaced. âSo is my grandmother.â
âYouâre hardly a grandmother. Dress up tonight. Thatâs what Iâm doing. Then pour on the charm.â
âThatâs your plan for the night? To pour on the charm?â
I heaved a sigh. âIâm going to try.â Make a last ditch effort to win Brad over.
Joe slowly shook his head. âYou donât have to try, Kate. Or dress up. Youâre terrific just the way you are.â
I couldnât believe I was going to say this, but it wasnât as though I was revealing anything he didnât already know. âThen why doesnât Brad notice me?â
âHeâs an idiot.â
I barked out a bit of laughter. âSo is the girl you met on the slopes.â
âI didnât say I met her on the slopes.â
âThen where did you meet her?â
âHow come I canât get it through your headânone of your business!â He reached down, grabbed a handful of snow, and tossed it at me.
âHey!â
I rushed past him. Felt snow hit my back. Without stopping, I reached down and scooped up my own handful, packed it together as I ran into the front yard of the condo, then spun aroundâ
And went flying as Joe tackled me to the snow-laden ground. When I tried to gather up snow to toss at him, he grabbed my wrists and held them in place beside my head. He was heavy on top of me, straddling me, but it didnât hurt.
His face was so close to mine that I got a real good look at the color hazel. I was intriguedâby the color and the way he was studying me.
âDonât try to hook me up with anyone, Kate,â he finally said.
I nodded slowly, my breath not having found me yet. âOkay.â
We stayed there, just staring at each other. I was barely aware of the cold beneath me, because I was so aware of the guy on top of me.
âAre you going to let me up?â I eventually asked.
âIs there going to be dancing at that party tonight?â
Where did that question come from? I shrugged as much as I was able. âI donât know.â
âWill you dance with me if there is?â
âSure.â
He grinned. âThen Iâll let you up.â
But he just stayed there, smiling and looking at me, until he finally shook his head and muttered, âBrad really is an idiot.â
Then he rolled off me, got to his feet, and pulled me to mine. As we walked up the steps to the condo, I couldnât help wondering if maybe I was an idiot as well.
Chapter 10
âH ot dogs?â Sam asked. âThatâs your idea of cooking a meal? Hot dogs?â
We were sitting at the dining room table. I glowered at Sam. âWeâre short on time because we have a party to get ready for. Besides, thereâs bound to be food there. Consider this a snack.â
âI love hot dogs,â Brad said. Heâd come back from Cynthiaâs shortly after we got home.
âClean-up should be a breeze,â Joe said.
âAbsolutely.â I smiled at Sam. âSo there.â
âWhat are we going to have tomorrow?â
âWe were thinking stew,â Allie
