donât need you or any other man to tell me I look good. I already know that.â
Solomon held his hands up. âExcuse me. Well, Miss Davis, I hope you will pardon me for underestimating you.â
She rolled her eyes at him. âIâd love to meet Solomon Crawford.â
âWhat do you mean?â he asked as he led her to the booth in the back of the restaurant.
Kandace looked into his eyes and shook her head. âWho are you? The real you, behind the money, the fancy clothes, and the slick attitude.â
âAll right, Iâll tell you who I am if you do the same. Whoâs the woman inside you?â
Before Kandace could say anything, a waiter walked over and placed their salads on the table. âPlease let me know if I can get you anything else,â he said, then left the table.
âYou go first,â she said as she took a quick bite of her salad.
âLadies first, my father always says,â he replied.
Kandace fingered her hair. âOkay,â she said. âI work too hard because I donât want to have to depend on anyone for anything.â
âI know that. If you want to see the real me, itâs only fair that I see the real you. Every tantalizing inch.â
âSee, there you go again,â she said. âCan we have a conversation without the sexual innuendo?â
Solomon took her hand in his. âAll right, Iâm going to be honest. This is new to me. I canât remember the last time Iâve been on a real date with a woman.â
âWas this before or after you got your heart broken?â
Solomon tapped her hand. âYou think you know me, huh?â
âI know your type. Men just donât deal with heartbreak the way women do. You hide behind meaningless one-night stands and overinflated actresses.â
He chuckled. âBeen watching Access Hollywood, huh?â
Kandace shrugged. âCanât help but notice you on TV. Youâve been linked to every hot chick in the world. So, why me?â
Solomon smiled. âAt first it was because your ass looked so great in that bathing suit.â
âPig,â she said.
âArenât we doing the honest thing here? You asked. I answered. You canât hold that against me.â
Kandace looked down at her hand, noticing that he was still holding it, gently stroking the back of it with his thumb. She felt comfortable sitting there with him and she wondered if this was a part of his charm. Is this how he eased his way between the thighs of all the women heâd been linked to? Were those stories even true?
âWell, you saw me in the bathing suit and then what?â she asked.
âYou challenge me, all right. I was really turned on when you didnât know who I was. I canât go anywhere and not be recognized. Itâs really refreshing to know that you werenât blinded by my name and what I have.â
âThatâs all it takes to get Solomon Crawford excited? I better alert the press,â Kandace joked.
He brought her hand to his lips. âYour turn,â he said. âTell me why a beautiful and smart woman like you is still single.â
âBecause I donât believe in settling,â she said, then toyed with her salad. âYou know, some women still want real love. Iâm willing to wait for it.â
âLove? Yeah, right. No one believes in love anymore.â Solomon jabbed at his salad. âWhy donât we talk about something else?â
âDo you mean to tell me that youâve been in love?â Kandace raised her eyebrows and broke into laughter. âThat explains so much.â
Solomon dropped his fork and folded his arms across his chest. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âI always heard that men couldnât handle heartbreak and youâre proof of it,â she said.
âWhatever.â
She stroked his hand. âItâs all right, weâve all been
