has. Or worse, heâs decided to go the DIY route. Note to self: remind dad of the importance of the Ten Commandments, especially the âthou shalt not killâ one.
Chapter 13
Into the Woods
Daniel : Jeans and comfortable shoes. Pick you up at seven.
I tilt my head, rereading the odd text on my phone. What the what?
Should I be standing at attention while waiting?
Daniel: Seven.
How Daniel of you. Why yes, Sir, go ahead and give out your orders. After all, weâre all here at your beck and call . This is ridiculous. It might have worked for him in the past. Not anymore. I speed dial his number. My number one.
âHales, anything urgent? Iâm in a meeting.â Authoritative and curt.
I sigh. âJust wanted to ask about that weird message of yours. Never mind.â
Thereâs a moment of silence on the line. âRoy, I need to take this one.â
âNo, Daniel, itâs not . . .â Important. I sigh again, listening to Daniel telling whoever this Roy person is that heâll call for him in five.
âHales.â Heâs back.
âYou didnât have to ââ
âWhatâs up?â
âWhere are we going?â
âSomewhere I want to take you.â
Now that helped, a lot. My gratitude, Sir.
âWhat are you up to?â he asks next, glaringly disregarding my initial question.
âI think I should call my parents.â I hate bringing this up, but itâs out there and should be dealt with, the sooner the better. Unfortunately, there are things that we canât just scrub off. âI hope Iâm not too late. I think itâs better they hear about Rob . . . her, from me.â
âIâll call your dad.â Gruff and determined.
âNo!â I practically bark the simple word. âLet me. Better I make the call. Daniel, believe me, heâll be less than pleased to hear about it.â And by that, I mean heâll probably have your head on a butcher block. Or another part of your body that Iâm quite fond of.
âMr. Stark.â Itâs Anneâs voice, Danielâs PA.
âHales?â Daniel says.
âGo ahead; weâll talk later.â
I stare at the phone in my hand. Itâs time I called my parents. I might as well get it over with already. What could be a better way to spend my lunch break than disappointing my parents? I look around to make sure the cubicles around me are vacant, and just as Iâm about to dial, my phone comes to life with âhomeâ flickering on the screen. Home can be either of my parents or both. In this specific moment, Iâm opting for my mom.
âLelly!â I release a trapped breath hearing my momâs comforting voice.
Just as my stiffened psyche mellows down a little, it straightens right back to my dadâs voice. âHayley.â
âI was just about to call you guys.â I go for casual.
âHow are you, sweetheart?â my mom asks.
âIâm fine, Ma. How are you guys? Steven?â
My momâs answer dissipates into my dadâs question. âHayley, is it true?â
Itâs as if a lead weight just landed on my chest. I feel like Iâm twelve again, trapped in my fatherâs solemn gaze as he waits for my answer after asking me whether Iâve shaved half of Stevenâs head while he was sleeping. The extenuating circumstances didnât help back then â âbut he read my diary, Daddyâ â and wouldnât probably in the present case either with âthereâs a high chance itâs not his child, Daddy.â I inwardly compose myself and say, âYou know how the media is; they always manipulate the truth and take things out of context.â
âHayley, has the man youâre engaged to got another woman pregnant?â
I squirm in my chair. A normal person should not be having this conversation with their parents. This is reality show material.
