and tee as I quickly pulled my shirt and jeans on my wet body.
“What's going on?” Markus asked as he yanked open the bathroom door.
“There are a bunch of people on the front lawn.” She bit her lower lip adding, “They have to be looking for you two.”
We hurried into the living room, Markus quickly flicking off the light as we entered. He motioned for us to duck down into the shadows. We could hear someone beating on the door and ringing the doorbell. “Markus what are we going to…” my voice trailed off as Markus put his finger to his lips. Looking warily towards the door, he gestured for us to stay down in the shadows.
Awakened by the commotion, Zachary came down the stairs rubbing his eyes.
“Mommy, I hear noises.” He pouted. “I can’t sleep.”
“Shhh, come here to mommy.” Susan said. She pulled his small body towards hers, wrapping him closely against her chest.
“Open up,” a loud voice said from outside the door. “We know that you've got that woman beast inside of there with you! Open this door!”
Woman beast! Shocked, I realized they meant me.
“You got them big dogs with you woman beast?” a voice in the crowd called out snickering. I recognized it as the man from the forest. “Monster wolves—I bet she got those monster wolves with her.” He hollered.
I could hear the crowd jeering. “Monsters!” one man called out. His voice was echoed by others cat-calling and yelling out names.
“That man in the woods with the gun. He must have seen me change and followed me,” I whispered. “I just don’t know how he could have kept up with me.” Then it hit me; the sound of a truck in the distance, the smell of fumes. “The keys were in the ignition. I bet he just followed me in the pickup!” I felt like slapping myself. I had made it so easy for him by sticking to the dirt road. “My head was so focused on getting back here I didn’t realize he was behind me in the truck the whole time. What are we going to do?”
Markus tightened his jaw as he peeked out the window. “It looks like a bunch of men out there in the yard and there’s more headed this way from down the street. Stay down, everyone.”
With my heart racing, I looked over at Susan. She was trembling as she clutched the tearful Zachary tightly to her body.
I felt this crushing sensation in my chest like I couldn’t breathe. My heart was racing; my hands cold and clammy. I closed my eyes trying to fight back the dizziness and nausea. If the whole town believed we were monsters, we were all in deep trouble.
Oh my God! What the hell were we going to do?
