light of day, Hope was thoroughly embarrassed at her own abandon. Her face grew hot as a sunburn, and she couldn’t even find the words to return their simple morning greetings.
“’Twould seem our Hope now regrets what happened in the wee dark hours.” Alec kissed her cheek. “No need to be ashamed, lass, we all—”
“I’m not ashamed! ” Her own vehement denial amazed her. “I’m merely… embarrassed .” She tugged the sheet a little higher up on her body, although she didn’t brush their hands away. “We’re all naked. I have never been naked in front of a man in the light of day.”
“Never?” Alec shook his head. “’Tis clear yer husband wasnae much of a lover.”
She didn’t bother denying it. The delights that Alec and Thomas had shown her had opened her eyes to Billy’s failings in bed, just as their hard work and kindness made Billy’s cruelty and sloth apparent. “Never. Surely sleeping without clothes is a sin.”
    Both men chuckled.
Thomas rubbed her stomach. “I think what we did in this bed last night would make sleeping naked seem quite tame.”
She quit the topic before she said something else so foolish. “I should be getting us breakfast.”
Thomas moved to snag his breeches and fetched his watch from the pocket. “It’s almost nine.”
“Nine?” Hope sat up. The sheet fell away from her breasts. “We have chores!”
No sooner were the words out of her mouth than the sound of approaching hoofbeats drifted through the open window, drawing nearer with each gallop.
“Sweet merciful Jesus. Someone’s here!” She scrambled over Thomas, her knee coming in contact with his groin.
He groaned and rolled away, shielding his cock and sac a few moments too late.
“I’m terribly sorry. How clumsy of me. Pray forgive me.”
A weak smile crossed his lips, which she read as forgiveness.
She jerked her wrinkled shirt over her head, not even bothering to search for her underthings. Bits of dried grass still clung to her clothes, but she didn’t have time to search for another ensemble. She dragged on her skirt and tried to fasten the buttons. “Where are my shoes?”
Thomas was still breathing deeply as he tried to stand. “I fear…we left them at the pond.”
“Get up! Both of you!” Panic sizzled through her. “You cannot be discovered naked in my house! In my bed, no less!”
Alec set his mouth into a hard line. “We will hide in yer other bedroom.”
“We’ll make sure no one see us, Hope,” Thomas added, reaching for his breeches.
Alec tugged on his pants. “We donnae want to blacken your name since ye love this town so much.”
“I don’t love this town,” she snapped, dragging her fingers through her tangled hair.
“Ye care naught for the people of this town? Ye care naught for this farm?”
    She shook her head.
“Then why are ye so worried about what they think of ye?”
“I have nowhere else to go.” She hurried from the room to face whatever disaster waited below.

A pair of her boots rested by the door. Hope shoved her feet inside, trying to don them quickly.
    “Hope? You in there?”
“Damn it.” Abe Driscoll . The absolute last person she’d ever want to see. “I’m coming!”
His footsteps sounded on her porch stairs. She couldn’t let him come inside. No doubt if her shoes had been left behind at the lake so had the men’s’ clothes. Then she recalled neither had worn a shirt. If Abe came inside, he’d know exactly what had happened last night.
    This just kept getting worse.
    “Hope?”
Hope pulled the door open and then pushed the screen door hard enough to hit Abe, knocking his hat from his head. He’d come uninvited, so she felt no need to apologize. Instead, she stepped out onto her porch and waited while he retrieved his hat and slapped it back on his head. “Why have you come all the way out here?”
“Not to get my nose broke, I can tell you that.”
Folding her arms under her breasts, she
