âJohnâs right. We are a strange family. We cry when weâre happy!â
Zoey laughed through her tears. âI guess I didnât know I was worried about it until you said that,â she explained. âBut now I feel so much better.â
âGood,â Aunt Lulu said. âNow letâs go have some dinner. Iâm eating for two, and Iâm ravenous!â
Zoey and Ezra met at the library on Saturday morning to see one of the free movies they were showing in the auditorium.
âHey, did you get a chance to ask the gift fair organizers about including my paintings?â Ezra asked before the movie started.
âYeah . . . about that,â Zoey said. âI thought about it, and I just felt like it would be unprofessional of me to ask them when I didnât include your paintings in my original submission. The other thing is . . . Well, even though I really love your art, it doesnât really match my Sew Zoey clothes and accessories, if you know what I mean.â
She glanced at Ezra anxiously to see his reaction.
âAre you upset?â
âNo, I understand,â he said. âMaybe a little disappointed. I was looking forward to hanging out.â
âWell, we can still hang out. And how about I call the organizers and see if there are any small booths left so that you could have one of your own?â Zoey offered. âThat way you could display your stuff, and weâd still get to hang out a little bit.â
âYouâd be okay with doing that?â
âSure. Iâll do it when I get home.â
Ezra smiled. âThanks, Zoey. Youâre the best!â
Zoey smiled back as the lights dimmed. Now that she knew Ezra wasnât upset with her, she could actually relax and enjoy the movie!
When she got home later that afternoon, she called Mrs. Perry, the gift fair organizer, to ask about the availability of a small booth for Ezra.
âIâm afraid there arenât any booths left,â Mrs. Perry said. âYou got the very last one.â
âOh,â Zoey said, crestfallen. âThatâs too bad. My friend was really looking forward to it.â
âDefinitely have him apply next year,â Mrs. Perry suggested. âAnd tell him to think about having some of his work printed on greeting cards. Those always sell well at the fair.â
âThatâs a good idea,â Zoey said. âThanks, Iâll tell him.â
As soon as she hung up, she called Ezra to tell him the news.
âItâs too bad about the booth,â she said. âBut you should definitely try next year. And what do you think about doing the greeting cards?â
âIâll think about it,â Ezra said. âIt sounds great.â
âThatâs what I thought,â Zoey said. âI bet youâd sell lots of them!â
âHey, are you going to be home in an hour?â Ezra asked.
âYeah,â Zoey said. âI have to make more bracelets for the gift fair.â
âIs it okay if I stop by to drop something off?â
âWhat is it?â Zoey asked.
âIf I tell you, it wonât be a surprise,â Ezra said.
âSure, itâs okay,â Zoey said. âBut now Iâm dying of curiosity!â
âIâll be there soon!â
The hour passed really slowly as Zoey tried to concentrate on making bracelets and not wonder what Ezra was bringing over. Finally, the doorbell rang, and she ran to answer it.
Ezra stood there holding a small painting.
âI brought this for you,â he said. âThanks for trying to get me a booth.â
âThatâs so sweet!â Zoey said. âIâm really sorry it didnât work out.â
âWell, I appreciate you making the call,â Ezra said. âIâll apply next year. Anyway, I better run. I just wanted to give this to you.â
âThanks, I love it!â Zoey called to him as he ran back
