blown nearly twenty grand on herself without blinking. Now, her mind was on making it back to her condo. As if her thoughts had been heard, her cell phone rang just as she climbed into the passengerâs seat of Sassyâs BMW. She smiled as she peered at her 6 Plus screen.
âHello,â she cooed into the phone.
Sassy noticed the sudden change in her tone and demeanor.
âOkay,â was all Jewels said before hanging up.
âBitch, who was that? Got you acting all sultry and shit over there.â Sassy chuckled as she questioned her friend.
âThat was someone whoâs going to reimburse me for some of the money I just spent,â offered Jewels
âWell, I hope he got some deep pockets, âcause our shopping sprees ainât cheap.â
âNow, you know better than to ask that shit!â Jewels laughed.
âYo, I wanna ask you a question about the other night.â
Jewels thought she had already satisfied Sassyâs curiosity. âWhat? I thought you got over that shit. Donât tell me you ainât get enough mush!â Jewels let out a nervous laugh.
âNah, it ainât like that. I just thought you would call Ralph.â
âWhat makes you think I didnât?â
âI called him right after I spoke to you and he ainât hear from yoâ ass.â
Jewelsâs eyebrows rose. âBitch, you a fucking investigator now!â She laughed, hoping the questioning would come to an end. âWell, if you must know, bitch, I didnât call Ralph, âcause I think he set me the fuck up. Iâm thinking that agency shit is not for me, anyway. I could have been killed. Can you not see these fucking bruises on my face? I think you should leave it too. You got enough clients on your own, and so do I.â
âYou right we should. And I sure as hell donât want to be caught in a situation like that. Besides, we the baddest bitches they got!â Sassy raised her hand for a high five. âAnd since you mentioned it, you covered those bruises pretty well, or else I would not be seen with your ass!â
Jewels was happy that conversation had ended. She was already keeping a secret house guest, and not telling Sassy about it didnât sit well with her. But she knew it had to be that way. All she could do now was wait until her guest left, and then sheâd tell Sassy the real deal.
Chapter Nine
âWhatâs good with you?â Rome said, greeting his right-hand man, Red. The two exchanged a brotherly hug and a handshake.
He and Red had been getting money and putting in work together for over ten years, since they were both thirteen years old. Red had earned his name not from his light-skinned complexion but from how red he turned whenever he got mad and was about to seriously hurt somebody.

âOkay. I feel you.â Rome nodded. âAnd I appreciate you takinâ care of that for me,â Rome said, thanking him.
âCome on, bruh. You know I got your back always,â Red replied.
âNo doubt, baby boy.â Rome flashed his signature grin. âBut Iâma still lay low at the chick crib for a few more days. No need to make it any hotter than it already is. Plus, I still wanna see if them fuck boys figure out anything,â he remarked.
âYeah, I been keepinâ my ear to the streets to see if Los and Buster up on anything. So far nothing,â Red reported. âBut whatâs up with you and ole girl?â Red wanted to know.
Romeâs facial expression became stoic. âAbsolutely nothing, my dude. Thatâs the furthest thing from my mind.â He left it at that.
âI feel you, but
