hope it took him a long time to die. I donât like outlaws. At all.â He pushed back his chair and stood up.
âHave you heard that some learned people are saying that home environment has a great deal to do in the making of a criminal?â Sam asked.
Finch blinked. âHellâs fire! Thatâs the silliest damn thing I ever heard of. I didnât even have shoes when I was a-growinâ up and I never stole nothinâ nor done a harmful thing to no innocent person in my life.â
Josiah Finch walked out of the saloon. The way he walked told anybody with a lick of sense that this was a man to be given a wide berth. Josiah might be small in stature, but he was one hell of a big man.
âThat, brother,â Matt said, âis one man I would not want on my trail.â
âNor me. You ready to head out?â
âYeah. Weâll camp alongside the roadâwell off the road. John Lee is liable to go on the warpath after today.â
âIf weâre lucky, heâll wait until Josiah Finch returns. I have a hunch Finch would willingly take on the entire bunch of them and come out on top!â
Chapter 6
âI already heard what happened,â Jeff said, meeting the wagons as they came to a stop in front of the house. âJohn Lee sent a rider over early this morning. His message was short and sweet. Heâs ordered any Circle S or Flyinâ V rider shot on sight if they come into Crossing.â
âIf Iâd a backed down, we wouldnât have any supplies. John Leeâs boys were waiting and had already told the shopkeeper not to sell to the Circle S or the Flying V.â
âI understand. Iâm not blaminâ you. It had to come at some point. Weâll just stay out of Crossing.â He smiled, a grim moving of the lips. âI told the messenger that any Broken Lance riders found on my range will be shot on sight.â
âDo you mean it?â Matt asked, after climbing down from the wagon seat.
âYes, I do. Ever seen a range war, son?â
âNot really.â
âTheyâre mean and ugly. And a lot of blood will be spilled on each side. The blood of men and women. Iâve ordered the girls to stay within sight of the house when they ride. Youâve seen how this land can fool you. You think youâre alone on the range and the next instant fifty riders come out over a swell not three hundred yards away from you.â
âWill they pay any attention to you?â Sam asked, a dubious note in his voice.
âYes. They know how serious this is. Now tell me this: how did the Broken Lance gunslicks know we were going to the settlement for supplies?â
âI imagine Cindy tipped off Nick,â Matt said.
âEd just left here. He thinks the same thing. He got the same message I got this morninâ.â
âHis reaction?â
âOpen the chute and let âer bump. I âspect right now Cindyâs rear end is on fire. He was talkinâ strong about takinâ a razor strop to her butt.â
âThat would be a sight to see,â Gene said with a grin. âIf anyone deserves it, she does.â
Â
Â
âI hate you!â Cindy screamed at her father. âYou canât whup me like a damn plow horse!â
Mrs. Carson had left the room in tears.
âDonât you even care that because of you your brother might have been killed?â
âNickâll kill you for slappinâ me around!â she screamed at him.
The father stood dumbfounded, staring at his girl. âIs that what you want, Cindy? Me dead?â
âYes!â she screamed. âI despise you. I love Nick. Iâm carrying his baby.â
âI know that.â The father spoke with a calmness he did not feel. âIâve known it for several weeks. Pack your bags, girl,â he told her. âTake the buggy. Leave it in town. Iâll pick it up someday. I want you out of this
