going to notice this.â
âWe have to hide this from your mom and dad.â
â How ?â
âOffer to babysit for the day,â replied Grace. âWeâll take her to my house. No, wait, not my house. Just in case you-know-who pops over. Weâll take her to Adieâs.â
Sarah looked back at them and gurgled loudly, before getting to her feet once more and striding toward the kitchen. At that moment, they heard Jennyâs mom open the back door.
âGrab her!â Grace squealed.
Jenny rushed forward, scooping Sarah up into her arms, just as her mom walked into the kitchen.
âYou all right, girls?â she asked, noticing their flushed faces.
âYeah, fine,â Jenny panted.
âIâll take her now, if you guys want to head up to Jennyâs room.â
âNo!â Jenny almost shouted. Then, calming herself, she said, âNo, Mom, thatâs okay. I was thinking Iâd give you and Dad a rest today. Why donât me and Grace take Sarah out for a while? You can have a nice, relaxing dinner this evening, by yourselves. You know, romantic, and all that.â
Jennyâs mom gave her a funny look.
âReally?â she said. âWell, thatâs very sweet of you, hon, but are you sure you girls can manage by yourselves?â
âOh, yeah,â replied Jenny. âIâve a feeling she wonât be any trouble today at all. Plus, Iâve got my cell with me so I can give you a call if I need to.â
âThatâs very kind of you, girls.â Her mom smiled back. âYour dad and I would really appreciate that. But please donât hesitate to call me, all right? About anything.â
âWill do, Mom,â Jenny called, as she hurried into the hall and tucked the baby into her stroller. Her mom packed up a bag of the babyâs things and handed it to Jenny as she leaned in to give Sarah a kiss. Jenny exhaled loudly as she watched her mom head back into the kitchen.
âAh!â Grace squealed. She rushed forward to grab hold of Sarah, who had unbuckled herself from the stroller and was climbing, chimpanzeelike, down one side.
âWeâd better get out of here,â said Jenny.

âYour parents arenât here, are they?â
Adie frowned at the two girls who stood, panting, on her porch.
âAnd hello to you too.â
âWeâve no time for sarcasm,â Grace said, pushing past Adie into the house. âAre your parents here?â
âNo, they went to my grannyâs. Whatâs going on?â
âThank goodness.â Jenny sighed, wheeling the stroller inside.
âWhat is it?â
âItâs spell number six,â replied Grace. âAnd itâs creepier than we thought it would be.â
âThereâs a shocker,â said Adie. âEverythingâs turning out creepier than we thought it would be. What was number six again?â
âThat baby Sarah could take care of herself for a day. Well, she seems very able to do that right now. Take a look at this.â
Grace lifted the baby out of the stroller and placed her gently on the floor. Sarah immediately got to her feet, stepped up onto the wheel of the stroller just long enough to grab her bottle, and trotted into the kitchen.
âUgh!â
âHey!â Jenny complained. âSheâs still my baby sister, you know.â
âSorry,â Adie apologized, âbut thatâs just plain freaky looking.â
âAnd Iâm afraid sheâll have to stay here for the day,â said Grace. âWe have to keep her hidden from her parents, or weâre all in trouble.â
Just then they heard the microwave turn on in the kitchen. They rushed in to see Sarah balanced carefully on a kitchen chair, pressing buttons to heat up her bottle of milk. Jenny picked her up and opened the microwave door to switch it off. Sarah shrieked in protest.
âWe canât take our eyes
