âem.â
Danny studied the manager. Even if Hannigan had it in for Helen, he couldnât see the man going to the Sands unnoticed and killing her there. In fact, Mrs Orchid was probably right about that. For Helen to have been killed the way she was, where she was, it must have been somebody on the inside.
Jack Entratter wasnât going to be happy to hear that â¦
In fact, I wasnât happy to hear it, either.
âSo that was it,â Danny said. âI left him to his TV dinner.â
âAnd thatâs why you felt you had to come right over?â I asked. âTo tell me you think it was an inside job?â
âThe more I thought about it, the more it made sense,â Danny said. âSomebody on the outside would wait until she left the building. Why take a chance on trying to get in, maybe somebody seeing them where they didnât belong?â
âBut somebody who already belonged wouldnât have to worry about that.â
âNo,â Danny said, âtheyâd just have to worry about getting her alone â like in the ladiesâ room.â
âMakes sense. Will you come by tomorrow and snoop around?â
âOn the payroll, right?â
âRight.â
âHey,â Danny said, âbefore I go, you never told me about your meeting with Hughes. How was he?â
âNaked.â
âFor real?â
âWell, he had a tissue across his crotch, but yeah, pretty much.â
âSo heâs as crazy as they say?â
âActually, I donât think so,â I said. âHeâs got this disease that makes it hurt whenever anything touches his bare skin.â
âAnything?â
I nodded.
âGuess Iâd sit around naked, too, if I had that,â Danny said.
âThatâs what I was thinkinâ.â
âWhat about the floor?â
âWhat about it?â
âHowâs he walk in his bare feet?â
âI donât know,â I said. âI was wondering how he even sat down.â
âI suppose heâs got to,â Danny said.
âYeah.â
âSo what did he want?â
âHe says heâs looking to buy a casino.â
âAnd whatâs he want with you?â
âHe says heâs heard about me, wants my help in finding a place to buy.â
âYou think heâs after the Sands?â
âI donât know.â
âWhat did you tell him?â
âI said Iâd think about it.â
âHe offer you a lot of money?â
âSome.â
âHe didnât find your price though, did he?â
âIâve got to get to dinner, Danny,â I said. âSee you at the Sands tomorrow?â
âIâll be there, Eddie.â
âLet me get my jacket and Iâll walk you out.â
I walked Danny to his car and watched him drive off. Then I got in the Caddy and drove to the Sands.
TWENTY-TWO
âC ome on in,â Frank said. âIâm almost ready.â
I stepped in and closed the door.
âI have to get my jacket, and my wallet,â Frank said. âIâll be a second.â
He went into the bedroom, reappeared just seconds later, one hand in his pocket; I assumed tucking his wallet away. He put one arm into his jacket and said, âOK, letâs go.â
âHow are you, Frank?â
âIâm good, kid.â He finished putting on his jacket, then slapped me on the arm, âIâm good. Letâs go show Eddie a good time, huh?â
We took the elevator to Robinsonâs floor and knocked on his door. When he answered and saw Frank, his face became infused with genuine pleasure.
âFrank!â He grabbed him and they hugged each other. âGood to see you.â He slapped Frank on the back.
âHey, Eddie,â Frank said. âReady for a good dinner?â
âIâm ready.â Robinson was already wearing his suit, so he just stepped into the hall and
