said. Suddenly he was struck with inspiration. âDo you?â
Calliope nodded and smiled again. She didnât even seem ready to rush off or anything. Bud took that as a sign. âCould you snag me a piece of music paper? A blank piece. I just ⦠I donât want to go down there right now. That teacher wants me to do chorus.â
Calliope looked over Budâs shoulder and nodded knowingly. âMiss Downey. Makes sense. Hold on one sec.â
Calliope turned, trotted down the hallway, and disappeared into a classroom. In a second she was back, holding out a piece of music paper.
âThanks, Calliope. Youâre the best.â Bud reached for the paper, but just as his hand closed around it, Calliope snatched it out of Budâs reach.
âNot so fast, Bud. Whatâs this for?â Calliope smiled again, but it didnât seem like such a friendly smile anymore. âJust curious.â
Bud hesitated. Itâs not like he could tell her. Calliopeâs name had been specifically mentioned in the donât-tell-anyone instructions. Laurie would kill him. And besides, Calliope seemed a little more than âjust curious.â More like cats are âjust curiousâ about what mice are up to. But he had to say something. âI ⦠itâs nothing. Just â¦â
âDoes it have something to do with Laurie Madison?â
Bud sucked in his breath and cursed his lousy poker face as Calliope smirked triumphantly. He knew heâd probably just given away the whole game. But itâs not like he would just spill the beans now.
âNo. Itâs, uh â¦â He searched wildly for a plausible explanation. âItâs the auditions. Iâm working on something. I really am auditioning, see. I was just pretending before.â
Calliopeâs eyes narrowed. âI didnât see your name on the sign-up list.â
Bud attempted a nonchalant laugh but ended up making a weird squeaking sound instead. âYeah, Iâm shy, okay? And Iâm still working on my piece. Thatâs why I need the paperâto work things out. Thanks, bye!â He snatched the paper out of Calliopeâs hand and dashed off down the hallway.
Once heâd rounded the corner, Bud tucked the paper into his notebook and smiled. He was pretty slick, if he did say so himself. Calliope didnât suspect a thing.

Question of the Day
by Laurie Madison, grade six
What would Bud and Calliope Judkin have to talk about? Besides plotting to find the treasure and cut me out completely, that is. Just wondering.

Bud fell into a chair next to Laurie in the cafeteria. âSuccess!â he said, slapping the music paper onto the table and smirking at Laurie and Misti.
âSo howâs Calliope?â Laurie said, folding her arms. âYou two have a nice talk?â
âHuh?â Bud felt like heâd wandered into the wrong conversation. Or a minefield. Both seemed likely.
Misti Pinkerton dropped her tuna sandwich back onto the plastic wrap. âWhat, is this an everyday thing? Every day, Laurie?â
âNot every day, okay?â Laurie grumbled. âWeâre working on a thing.â
âOh, okay. If itâs a thing ,â Misti groused, picking up her sandwich and finishing it off in one bite. âIâve lost my appetite.â
Bud watched as Misti crumpled up her empty lunch bag. âYeah, I can tell,â he said, grinning at Laurie.
Misti glared at him and stalked off without a backward glance.
âWay to go, Bud.â Laurie snickered. âSo you got it?â
Bud pushed the
